Auto-Ordnance Thompson Black and Gold Overview

Auto-Ordnance, part of the Kahr Firearms Group, introduced the T1ABTG in August 2026. It pairs a deep matte black steel receiver with polished gold on the Cutts compensator, front sight, rear battle sight, charging handle, pivot plate, trigger, safety selector, sling swivels and buttplate, plus a matching gold 20-round stick magazine. The 16.5-inch finned barrel wears the Cutts compensator for an 18.5-inch total length. Furniture is American walnut with the horizontal rear stock, pistol grip and vertical foregrip with finger grooves.

A Carbine, Not a Pistol

Our earlier listing called this a pistol. It is a shoulder-fired carbine with a full buttstock and a 16.5-inch barrel, sold as a semi-automatic rifle. It fires one round per trigger pull and is not an NFA item, so it transfers like any other long gun. Buyers 18 and older can purchase it from a dealer, just as with a hunting rifle.

A Collector’s Piece

Auto-Ordnance says this is the last Thompson to be marked as produced in Worcester, Massachusetts, as production moves to Greeley, Pennsylvania. That provenance, plus the striking finish, makes it a display piece as much as a range gun.

Shooting the Thompson

The 1927A-1 is heavy, so the .45 ACP feels mild from the shoulder. The rear battle sight is simple and quick at short range. The Cutts compensator is mostly a period detail on a semi-auto; do not expect it to reduce recoil much.

Honest Caveats

Thompsons are heavy, typically around 13 pounds for 1927A-1 Deluxe models, and they are not precision rifles. Polished gold accents show fingerprints and holster wear, and the finish needs gentle cleaning. Drum magazines are sold separately where legal. .45 ACP ammunition costs more than 9mm.

Care and Display

Wipe the gold parts with a soft cloth and avoid abrasive solvents on them. A padded case protects the walnut, and many owners keep this edition for display and occasional range days. If you plan to shoot it regularly, buy a few spare stick magazines so the gold one stays pristine, and keep the bore and compensator clean, because lead and carbon build up quickly around the Cutts slots.

State Laws and Ownership

Pennsylvania does not require a permit to buy or own this rifle, and buyers 18 and older can purchase it through a dealer. Other states are stricter: some cap magazine capacity, some regulate features such as pistol grips, adjustable stocks, flash hiders or threaded barrels, and a few restrict how a long gun may be transported. A few states restrict semi-automatic rifles with features like a vertical foregrip or detachable magazines over 10 rounds. Check your state and local rules before ordering, and ask your receiving dealer about any restrictions where you live.

Before You Buy

Federal law requires this rifle to ship to a licensed FFL dealer, where you complete ATF Form 4473 and pass a background check before taking possession.
