Description
The Athlon Optics Midas Flare 1x Prism gives you a fixed power prism sight in a compact package. Unlike a standard reflex sight that projects an LED dot, a prism sight uses a glass prism with the aiming point cut right into the glass, so you still have a usable reticle even if the battery runs dead in the middle of a range day or after months in the safe.

Athlon Optics Midas Flare 1x Prism Overview
Athlon catalogs the Midas Flare 1x as part 403077. It has a 22mm objective, a 3 inch length and weighs about 9.78 ounces, so it carries a little more glass and metal than a tube style red dot. The reticle can be lit in red or green, and the center dot is listed at 6 MOA. The lenses are fully multi-coated for clear, bright light transmission, and the sight sits on an included Picatinny mount with a 1.57 inch center height that suits most AR style rifles and carbines with an absolute co-witness or close to it.
Reticle That Works Without Power
Because the pattern is etched into the glass, it stays sharp and black when the illumination is turned off. That is a real backup for a home defense rifle or a range gun that sits in the safe for months. Shooters with astigmatism also tend to like prism sights, since a glass reticle looks crisp instead of blurry or starburst shaped like some LED dots can. The prism design also lets you focus the eyepiece on many models, so the reticle stays clean for your eyes.

Red or Green Illumination
You can switch between red and green illumination. Red tends to stand out well indoors and in low light, while many shooters find green easier to pick up against bright backgrounds and in daylight. Brightness settings let you dial the reticle to suit the light you are shooting in.
Mounting and Height
The Midas Flare 1x mounts to any standard Picatinny rail. On a flat top AR the 1.57 inch height puts the reticle in a natural spot for a cheek weld on the stock. It also works on shotguns, pistol caliber carbines and other long guns that have a full length rail.

Built by Athlon
Athlon backs its optics with the Gold Medal Lifetime Warranty, which is transferable and does not require a receipt. The housing is aluminum and the sight is built to handle recoil, weather and normal field use.
Prism vs Reflex Sight
A reflex sight is light, fast and has a big open window, which is why it is so common on carbines. A prism sight is a bit heavier and has a shorter eye relief, but it gives you a reticle that does not depend on a battery and a sharper image for shooters whose eyes do not play well with LED dots. For a duty or defense carbine, many shooters see that as a worthwhile trade.
If you want the best of both, mount the Midas Flare 1x on a quick detach mount so you can move it between rifles and keep it zeroed on each one.
Zeroing Tips
Most rifle and shotgun shooters zero a red dot at 50 or 100 yards, depending on the gun and how it will be used. Start at about 25 yards to get on paper, then move back and fine tune. Fire small groups before each change, and confirm zero with the ammunition you plan to use.
Battery Care
Replace the battery once a year on a defensive gun, even if the dot still looks fine, and keep a spare in your range bag. Wipe the lens with a soft cloth or lens pen, not a shirt tail, to keep the coatings clean. If the dot seems dim or flickers, check the battery and contacts first.
