Description

The Alpha Foxtrot Romulus 5 Inch 9mm is the government length version of the AF1911 Romulus, and the one to buy if the gun is going to live on a range rather than on a belt. Five inches of bull ramped barrel, a SUS416 stainless frame and slide in DLC black with the flats left polished, an MOS cut slide and ambidextrous controls. Part number AA39X1EIH-PDBK19, UPC 810100535872.

What the extra three quarters of an inch buys

Sight radius is the obvious gain on the Alpha Foxtrot Romulus 5 Inch 9mm. Going from 4.25 inches to five puts noticeably more distance between the rear sight and the front, which shrinks the angular error from any given sight misalignment. If you shoot irons at distance, that is free accuracy, and an AF1911 Romulus 5 inch slide gives you about three quarters of an inch more of it than the compact does.

The less obvious gain is balance. A five inch bull barrel puts more mass forward of the trigger guard, and on a full size 2011 style pistol in 9mm that extra weight out front is what keeps the dot flat between shots. It is the same reason competition shooters have gravitated to longer, heavier guns rather than shorter ones.

What you give up is carry. A five inch 2011 with a rail and a double stack grip is a large handgun, and concealing one is a project rather than an afterthought. If carry is the job, buy the 4.25 inch Romulus instead; the Alpha Foxtrot Romulus 5 Inch 9mm is not trying to be that gun.

Build, optic mounting and the honest notes

The frame and slide are SUS416 stainless finished in DLC, a diamond like carbon coating that is considerably harder and more wear resistant than a typical nitride or Cerakote. On the Alpha Foxtrot Romulus 5 Inch 9mm the slide flats are left bright against the black, which is the cosmetic difference from the matte models in the same family.

The slide of the Alpha Foxtrot Romulus 5 Inch 9mm is cut for an MOS style adapter plate, which takes Trijicon RMR and RMSc footprint optics through the appropriate plate. That flexibility costs you one extra interface between optic and slide, so use a torque driver and thread locker on the plate screws and check them periodically rather than assuming they will stay put under recoil.

Two things to know going in on the Alpha Foxtrot Romulus 5 Inch 9mm. Double stack 1911 magazines are expensive and are not cross compatible between brands, so budget for spares at roughly the price of a decent optic mount each. And while this pistol competes with guns costing two to three times more, it is not one of those guns; buy it because the value is good, not because you expect a custom shop.

A cataloguing note. Alpha Foxtrot lists the matte finished versions of this pistol on their own site but not this polished PDBK configuration, and magazine counts vary across the Romulus line and the part number suffix does not indicate capacity, so quote Alpha Foxtrot AA39X1EIH-PDBK19 in full when you order and call us if the magazine question matters to your decision. The manufacturer’s current lineup is at Alpha Foxtrot. If you would rather have the shorter one, the 4.25 inch Romulus in the same finish is on the shelf, and the rest of our handguns are here.

A longer sight radius than the 4.25 inch gun, which is free accuracy with irons.

Forward weight from the five inch bull barrel keeps the dot flat between shots.

DLC over stainless is among the harder wearing finishes on a production handgun.

Fully ambidextrous controls, which most 1911 pattern pistols charge extra for.

The Alpha Foxtrot Romulus 5 Inch 9mm is aimed at competition and range use, where size costs you nothing and sight radius and weight both work in your favor. It makes a capable optic ready 9mm race gun for USPSA Limited Optics or Carry Optics style shooting without the four thousand dollar entry fee. If you have never held a double stack 1911, handle one before you commit; the grip is wide and it either suits your hand or it does not.
