Description

Aguila 40 S&W 180gr FMJ 50 round box of range ammunition

Aguila 40 S&W 180gr FMJ is straightforward range ammunition in the heavier of the two common 40 calibre bullet weights. Fifty rounds of brass-cased, boxer-primed full metal jacket at 1,050 fps, made in Mexico and priced to be shot rather than saved.

What You Get in Aguila 40 S&W 180gr FMJ

The 180 grain bullet is the more common of the two mainstream 40 S&W weights, the other being 165 grain. Heavier and slower generally means a slightly softer, more rolling recoil impulse than the lighter bullet driven faster, which many shooters find easier to control across a long practice session.

It also matters for training realism. A great many 40 calibre duty and carry loads use a 180 grain bullet, so practising with Aguila 40 S&W 180gr FMJ keeps recoil and point of impact closer to what your carry ammunition does than a 165 grain practice load would.

Aguila is loaded by Industrias Tecnos in Cuernavaca, Mexico, a plant running since 1961. Cases are reloadable boxer-primed brass, which quietly lowers the real cost per round if you load your own.

Availability is worth a mention. Aguila is one of a handful of makers who have kept 40 S&W in steady production through periods when American plants were prioritising 9mm, and pricing has generally stayed sane as a result.

Specifications

Chattanooga Shooting Supplies lists 1,050 fps and 441 ft-lbs for this load. The arithmetic reconciles exactly for a 180 grain bullet at that velocity, so the numbers are internally consistent rather than optimistic.

That is standard pressure 40 S&W. Expect close to the published figure from a four to four and a half inch service pistol and somewhat less from a compact. Nothing about this load asks anything unusual of the gun.

One practical note on 40 S&W generally: it operates at higher pressure than 9mm in a similar sized case, and pistols chambered for it work harder. Recoil springs are a wear item on high-round-count 40 calibre guns, and a slack spring shows up as brass landing at your feet and the slide feeling harsh. Replace it on schedule rather than when it fails.

Field Notes

This is practice ammunition. Full metal jacket does not expand and over-penetrates by defensive standards, so keep a proper hollow point in the carry gun and use Aguila 40 S&W 180gr FMJ to learn how that gun behaves.

Matching bullet weight to your duty load is the useful part. If you carry 180 grain, train with 180 grain and your zero confirmation actually means something.

Keep the brass if you reload. Fifty pieces of once-fired 40 S&W brass has real value, and 40 brass is generally plentiful and cheap to work with.

Indoor range rules vary. Full metal jacket is accepted almost everywhere, which is one more reason a plain FMJ practice load is the easy default.

Need an expanding load for the same pistol? Underwood 40 S&W 200gr Hard Cast covers the woods role, and 40 S&W snap caps make dry fire and magazine testing safe. Company background is published by Aguila Ammunition.

For anyone who shoots 40 S&W regularly and carries a 180 grain load, Aguila 40 S&W 180gr FMJ is a sensible practice choice. MAG5 Firearms stocks it in the 50 round box, manufacturer item 1E402110.
