Description
A-Zoom 270 WSM Snap Caps are machined aluminum dummy rounds cut to 270 Winchester Short Magnum dimensions, two to a pack. On a short magnum, where the fat case body and rebated rim make feeding fussier than a standard cartridge, having inert rounds to cycle is genuinely useful rather than just convenient.
How A-Zoom 270 WSM Snap Caps Are Built
Each round is CNC machined from solid aluminum billet to full cartridge dimensions and hard anodized in red. One piece, no separate case head, no plastic body. Nothing can shear off and strand a case in the chamber, which is the failure that makes cheaper two-piece dummies genuinely annoying to deal with.
The primer end carries a proprietary polymer cushion rather than a live primer. A-Zoom rates it past three thousand strikes, and it lets the firing pin decelerate roughly as it would on a real primer instead of stopping hard against the bolt face.
The red anodizing keeps A-Zoom 270 WSM Snap Caps clearly distinguishable from loaded ammunition, which matters when you are working a bolt in a room where live short magnum rounds are also sitting out.
Dimensional accuracy is the whole job. A dummy that headspaces short or sits low in the magazine tells you nothing useful about the rifle, so these are machined to the same tolerances A-Zoom holds across the rest of the rifle line.
Why Dummy Rounds Matter on a Short Magnum
The WSM case is short, fat and rebated, and it has to make a sharper turn out of the magazine than a 30-06 length cartridge does. Rifles built on converted long actions or fitted with aftermarket magazines are where feeding problems show up, and cycling A-Zoom 270 WSM Snap Caps through the magazine is how you find that at the bench rather than on a hunt.
Two rounds is the right count for that job and for trigger work. Setting break weight, checking sear engagement after a trigger swap and confirming the safety actually blocks the sear all want a dummy in the chamber rather than an empty one.

Field Notes
Storing a rifle with the striker down on a snap cap keeps the mainspring relaxed without leaving a cocked action in the safe. A-Zoom 270 WSM Snap Caps cost a fraction of a firing pin assembly on a magnum bolt gun.
They are also the practical way to rehearse a follow-up shot. Working the bolt fast without a live round in the rifle is how the motion gets smooth, and doing it on an empty chamber is how firing pins get short.
The polymer cushion is a consumable. When the face is visibly cratered and no longer springs back, retire that round rather than continuing to strike a dead cushion.
Handloaders get a second use out of them. Comparing a machined dummy against your own loaded rounds is a quick check on overall length and magazine fit before you commit to building a batch.
Shooting standard chamberings too? The line covers 30-06 Springfield in a five pack and 308 Winchester in a ten pack. Construction details are published by A-Zoom.
For hunters running a 270 WSM and anyone chasing a feeding gremlin on a short magnum, A-Zoom 270 WSM Snap Caps are the right tool. MAG5 Firearms stocks them as manufacturer item PA12219 in the two pack.
