Where a 3 Dram Load Fits

Trap shooters generally own three shells and argue about which one to use. The 1145 fps light load is the softest shooting and the best choice for high volume practice. The 1250 fps handicap shell is for the long yardage. This 3 dram equivalent shell at 1200 fps sits in the middle, and for a great many shooters it is the only one they actually need. It reaches sixteen yard targets comfortably, it handles the front half of a handicap card, and it does not beat you up doing it.

The extra 55 fps over the light load shortens your lead a little and buys a small margin of pellet energy at distance. Whether you notice that depends on how far your targets are when you break them. What you will notice is that recoil is still modest for a 1 1/8 ounce charge, which is the reason 3 dram remains the most common competition trap load in the country.

High antimony lead shot is what separates a competition shell from a promotional one. Harder pellets deform less as they are squeezed through the forcing cone and choke, so more of them fly straight and land inside the pattern circle. Combined with the Podium wad, which cushions the shot column at ignition with a compression zone in its base, this 12 gauge trap load puts a consistent pattern on the target rather than a lucky one.

This is a 2 3/4 inch shell, safe in any 12 gauge chambered 2 3/4 inch or longer. The straight wall hulls are popular with shotshell reloaders and worth saving if you load your own.

Honest Notes on Choosing a Trap Shell

Do not assume faster is better. A lot of shooters buy the fastest shell on the shelf and then wonder why their scores drop late in a long event. Recoil is cumulative, and a flinch developed on the eightieth target costs more than the shortened lead of a hot shell ever gained. If you are shooting sixteen yard trap and practice, the 1145 fps light load is often the smarter buy and Federal All American 12ga 1200 fps 7.5 shot is the sensible step up rather than the default.

Shot size still matters more than velocity for most people. Number 7.5 carries better at distance than number 8 and is the standard trap choice for that reason. If you shoot skeet or close sporting on the same day, keep a box of number 8 in the bag rather than trying to make one shell do everything.

Lead is restricted at some public ranges. Private trap clubs almost universally allow it and reclaim the shot, but confirm before showing up somewhere new with a case.

Finally, pattern your gun with the shell you intend to shoot. Different wads and shot hardness pattern differently through the same choke, and knowing whether your modified tube is throwing 65 or 78 percent at forty yards tells you more about your scores than any change of ammunition will.

For high volume practice the 1145 fps light load recoils noticeably less, and for the back fence the 1250 fps handicap shell is the right tool. Full factory data is on the Federal Premium product page.
