Description

Remington Royal Flush 20ga 8 Shot is part of the Premier Royal Flush line Remington built specifically for upland birds. This is the 2 3/4 inch 20 gauge version, carrying one ounce of lead number 8 at 1220 fps, catalogued as part 20570. Twenty five rounds to the box. It is aimed squarely at grouse in the timber and quail in cover rather than at long crossers.

Built for Close Cover Birds
Grouse and quail are shot at fifteen to thirty yards more often than not, usually with the bird already accelerating and something in the way. What matters at that distance is pattern density, not pellet energy. A one ounce charge of number 8 holds a great many pellets, and it is that count which turns a snap shot at a flushing bird into a clean kill rather than a miss.
A one ounce payload is on the heavy side for a 20 gauge, and that is deliberate. Standard 20 gauge field loads carry 7/8 ounce, so this puts about fourteen percent more shot in the air without moving to a 3 inch hull. In a small bore where pellet count is the constraint, that difference is meaningful.
The 1220 fps velocity is moderate by modern standards and that suits the job. Faster shells deform slightly more shot on setback and open patterns, which is exactly what you do not want on a close bird. A moderate velocity 20 gauge upland load with a heavy charge of small shot is the classic timber recipe, and there is a reason it has not changed much.
Remington Royal Flush 20ga 8 Shot Specifications
This is a 2 3/4 inch shell suitable for any 20 gauge chambered 2 3/4 inch or longer. Because it is lead shot it can be fired safely through older fixed choke guns that are not rated for steel, which matters because a lot of grouse guns are exactly that.

Honest Notes on Upland Loads
Number 8 has a hard range limit. Past about thirty yards these pellets stop carrying enough energy for anything larger than a quail, and on a pheasant at thirty five yards Remington Royal Flush 20ga 8 Shot will wound rather than kill. If your ground produces longer shots or bigger birds, buy number 6 or number 5 and keep this shell for the timber.
Open your choke. Small shot patterns densely and a grouse at eighteen yards needs a wide pattern, not a tight one. Skeet or improved cylinder is right for this work, and anyone shooting modified or full at close flushing birds is making the shot harder than it needs to be.
A one ounce load in a light 20 gauge recoils more than a 7/8 ounce load, and grouse guns tend to be very light. Over a long day of walking and occasional shooting that is fine, but if you are shooting a five and a half pound side by side and find it unpleasant, the standard 7/8 ounce field load will kill grouse just as well inside twenty five yards.
Finally, check lead restrictions on the ground you hunt. A growing number of state wildlife areas and all federal waterfowl production areas require non toxic shot even for upland birds, and grouse cover on public land is a common place people are caught out.
For bigger birds and longer shots see the NobelSport 20 gauge number 5 high velocity load, and the Migra Staxd 20 gauge high brass pheasant load is the heavy alternative. Full factory data is on the Remington Premier Royal Flush page.
