Description
Federal 44 Mag 280gr Swift A-Frame ammunition is a premium handgun hunting load built for big, tough game. The heavy 280 grain Swift A-Frame bullet leaves a 6 inch vented test barrel at about 1,170 feet per second, combining controlled expansion with the deep penetration needed for elk, black bear and large hogs. Each box holds 20 rounds in nickel plated cases.
Two Bullets in One
The Swift A-Frame uses a solid copper partition, the A-Frame wall, that divides the bullet into two sections. The bonded front core expands consistently across a wide range of impact speeds, while the back half stays intact and keeps driving forward. The result is high weight retention and reliable penetration whether the shot is close or at the edge of handgun range.
At 280 grains, this is one of the heaviest common 44 Magnum loads. Federal’s published data shows it still carrying about 977 feet per second at 100 yards, so the heavy bullet keeps its momentum through bone and muscle.
Nickel plated cases resist corrosion and extract easily, a welcome detail in a revolver after a long day in wet weather.

Big Game Handgun Tips
Use Federal 44 Mag 280gr Swift A-Frame ammo only in firearms chambered for 44 Remington Magnum.
Heavy bullets usually print higher than 240 grain loads in a revolver. Sight in with this load at the distance you plan to hunt.
Practice with a firm two hand grip. Heavy 44 Magnum loads produce significant recoil, especially in lighter revolvers.
Check bullet seating after firing a few rounds to make sure recoil is not pulling bullets forward in the remaining chambers.
Federal 44 Mag 280gr Swift A-Frame ammo is a powerful choice for handgun hunters after elk, black bear and big hogs, and for backcountry travelers who want a heavy, deep penetrating revolver load.
Federal 44 Mag 280gr Swift A-Frame ammo carries roughly 850 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle by standard calculation from a 6 inch barrel, and the heavy bullet holds that energy well downrange. That combination of weight and construction makes an A-Frame a sensible pick when the game is large or potentially dangerous.
The 44 Magnum is also popular in lever action carbines and single shot rifles. Fired from a longer barrel, Federal 44 Mag 280gr Swift A-Frame rounds gain velocity and offer even more reach, making them a strong choice for hunters who use a 44 carbine in thick timber.
Backcountry anglers, hunters and hikers in bear country often carry a 44 Magnum for protection. A heavy, tough bullet that penetrates deeply is the preferred choice for that role, and this load is built for exactly that kind of work.
Shot placement still decides every hunt. Practice from field positions, learn your holdover and keep shots within your proven range.
Store your ammunition in a cool, dry place. Buying a few boxes of Federal 44 Mag 280gr Swift A-Frame from the same lot lets you practice and hunt with consistent results.
Clean the cylinder and bore after shooting heavy magnum loads, as built up fouling can make extraction harder over a long session.
