Patterning your shotgun with a new load is the best way to know how it performs. Shoot a few rounds at a large sheet of paper at 25 to 35 yards with the choke you plan to hunt with, and check that the densest part of the pattern lines up with your point of aim. Trying a tighter or more open choke can make a real difference on fast, close birds.
Store shotshells in a cool, dry place in their original box, and keep loads with different shot sizes separated so you always grab the right shell in the field. Buying enough from the same lot for the whole season keeps velocity and pattern consistent from one hunt to the next, so your practice carries over to the field.
Choosing 12 Ga Waterfowl Loads
When comparing 12 ga waterfowl loads, hunters look for speed, dependable patterns and reliable cycling in cold weather. Federal 12 ga Speed-Shok loads deliver all three at a price that makes it easy to stock up for the season.
Waterfowl hunters have been required to use non-toxic shot in the United States since 1991, and steel has become the most common choice because it is affordable and widely available.
Because steel is lighter than lead, hunters often choose a shot size one or two steps larger than they would with lead and rely on high velocity to maintain pellet energy at decoying distances.
