Slug Practice Without the Lead

Slugs turn a shotgun into a short range rifle, and precise slug shooting takes practice. Training with lead free slugs lets agencies and instructors run accuracy drills, slug select reloads and barricade work at indoor ranges and facilities that limit lead exposure.

The BallistiClean line pairs lead free projectiles with Federal’s Catalyst lead free primer, reducing airborne lead and residue for shooters, instructors and range staff. That makes it a smart choice for high volume programs and indoor ranges.

A 25 round box gives a full session of slug drills, from zero confirmation to timed courses of fire, without tapping into duty or hunting ammunition.

Field Notes and Training Tips

Use Federal BallistiClean 12ga Slug shells for slug accuracy drills, slug select reload practice and qualification preparation at ranges that require or prefer lead free ammunition. Always follow range rules on slug use and backstops.

Confirm where these training slugs hit relative to your duty or hunting slugs. Training loads can print differently, so record any offset before relying on drill results.

Practice slug select techniques, where you quickly swap a buckshot round for a slug, until the motion is smooth and fast. Consistent training rounds make that practice easier.

Store ammunition in a cool, dry place and keep training slugs clearly separated from duty and hunting loads.

If you train with a shotgun and need lead free slugs for indoor or environmentally restricted ranges, Federal BallistiClean 12ga Slug shells are a practical, proven choice. Pair them with a side saddle to practice fast reloads.

Slug accuracy depends on fundamentals: a consistent cheek weld, a steady hold and a smooth trigger press. Practice at 25 and 50 yards, then extend your distance as your groups tighten. With Federal BallistiClean 12ga Slug shells, you can run those sessions often enough to build real confidence, even on ranges with strict lead policies.

Instructors often combine slug drills with buckshot patterning in the same session, teaching students when each load is appropriate. Pairing BallistiClean slugs and buckshot keeps the entire session lead free.

Clean your shotgun after training, especially the barrel and choke area, and inspect your sights or optic mount for any loosening after repeated slug recoil.

Many agencies run qualification courses that include slug shots at 25 yards or more, and regular practice with consistent training slugs builds the accuracy needed to pass with confidence.

For civilian shooters, defensive shotgun classes increasingly cover slug use alongside buckshot. Bringing Federal BallistiClean 12ga Slug shells to a class held at an indoor or lead restricted facility ensures you can participate fully. Ask your instructor ahead of time which training loads the range allows.

When shooting slugs indoors, follow the range’s ventilation procedures, wear quality hearing protection and wash your hands after the session, even with lead free ammunition.
