Speed for Fast Moving Birds

Doves are among the fastest and most erratic game birds a shotgunner will face. They change direction in an instant and often come in high or crossing at speed. A faster shot charge reduces the lead you need and gives the pattern less time to fall behind a turning bird. At about 1,350 fps, Fast Dove is quicker than many standard field and target loads.

A 1 ounce charge of #8 shot provides a dense pattern with plenty of pellets for small birds while keeping recoil manageable. That matters on opening day, when you may fire several boxes in an afternoon. Less punishment to the shoulder means better gun mounts and better shooting late in the hunt.

The high brass head adds a bit of strength and a classic look, and Winchester’s reliable primers and wads help these shells cycle in pump and semi-auto shotguns alike. Many shooters also use them for sporting clays and skeet practice before the season opens.

Field Notes and Hunting Tips

Use Winchester Fast Dove 12ga 1oz 8 Shot shells for mourning dove, Eurasian collared dove, quail and other small upland birds where lead shot is permitted. Always check local regulations, since some public lands and refuges require non-toxic shot.

An improved cylinder or modified choke is a good starting point for dove fields, where shots often range from 20 to 40 yards. Pattern your gun before the season so you know how this load prints with your chokes.

Wear eye and ear protection, and use the extra speed of this load to keep your swing moving through the bird. Many misses on doves come from stopping the gun, not from too little lead.

Store shells in a cool, dry place and bring extra boxes to the field. A good dove shoot can go through ammunition quickly, and running out when the birds are flying is no fun.

If you hunt doves or shoot clays with a 12 gauge and want a fast, light recoiling load, Winchester Fast Dove 12ga 1oz 8 Shot shells are a powerful, proven pick. Add a quality shell pouch to keep loads handy in the field.

Dove season is also a great time to introduce new hunters to wingshooting. A light, fast 1 ounce load is easier on newer shooters than heavier pheasant or waterfowl shells, and the steady action of a good dove field gives them plenty of practice. Pair new hunters with an experienced mentor, emphasize safe zones of fire, and keep everyone in blaze orange or clearly visible clothing when hunting in groups.

After the hunt, clean your shotgun to remove plastic wad residue and powder fouling from the chamber and choke tube threads. A quick wipe down with a lightly oiled cloth also protects metal surfaces from moisture picked up in the field.
