Description

The Leupold Mark 4HD 8-32×56 PR3-MIL is item 183971, the densest-reticle version of the highest-magnification scope in the Mark 4HD line. Five scopes share this body in our range and this is the only one with a PR3 grid.

Five 8-32×56 scopes, and what separates them

All five are 34 mm tube, 56 mm objective, first focal plane, side focus to 25 yards, 30 ounces and 15.6 inches. Three things differ: turret system, reticle and whether the reticle lights up.

This one, item 183971, is the M5C3 turret in 0.1 MIL with a PR3-MIL reticle and no illumination. Item 183970 is the same turret with a PR2-MIL. Item 183969 is the M1C3 in 1/4 MOA with a PR2-MOA. Items 188485 and 188486 are the illuminated versions of those last two.

So if you work in mils and want the most reference the line offers, the Leupold Mark 4HD 8-32×56 PR3-MIL is the one. PR3 packs more holdover and wind graduations into the tree than PR2 does.

Magnification bought at the cost of travel

Worth reading twice. This scope publishes 70 MOA, or 20 MIL, of total elevation, and 45 MOA, or 13 MIL, of windage. The mechanically smaller 6-24×52 in the same family publishes 125 MOA and 65 MOA.

Climbing the magnification ladder here costs you dial rather than gaining it. Plan on a canted base if you intend to reach a long way, and get your zero centred, because 13 mils of windage is not generous at distance.

Leupold also publishes the elevation dial travel limit as the phrase Total Scope Travel rather than a number, on all the 8-32×56 scopes. Every other Mark 4HD gives a figure. Read it as the full 20 MIL being available on the dial.

Leupold Mark 4HD 8-32×56 PR3-MIL turrets, parallax and glass

Elevation is the M5C3: locking, with a revolution indicator and a set screw rezero. Windage is a zero-lock turret. Both axes move 10 MIL per revolution in 0.1 MIL clicks.

Parallax adjusts by side focus down to a 25 yard minimum. Note that this scope is marked Precision Side Focus: No while its two illuminated siblings are marked Yes, on otherwise identical optics. We report that rather than resolve it.

Field of view is 13.1 feet at 8x and 3.4 feet at 32x, per 100 yards. Eye relief is published at 4.2 inches at low magnification and 3.9 at high, which runs backwards against most of the range. Mount the Leupold Mark 4HD 8-32×56 PR3-MIL so 3.9 inches is what you have at 32x.

Honest notes

The Leupold Mark 4HD 8-32×56 PR3-MIL shows a lot of line at 8x, and there is no illumination and no battery in this scope. In poor light at the bottom of the zoom, picking the aiming point out of the grid takes a moment.

No BDC dial is included and the scope is not Custom Dial System compatible. Custom BDC dial compatibility is not published for this item, unlike the illuminated pair, so ask Leupold before planning on a dial.

At 30 ounces plus 34 mm rings this belongs on a bench, a bipod or an F-class line. No finish colour, coating list or light transmission figure is published, so we print none of the three.

Who this scope suits

Competitors and long-range shooters working in mils who want maximum reference in the reticle, and anyone who spends the day at magnification calling their own impacts. The Leupold Mark 4HD 8-32×56 PR3-MIL is waterproof, fogproof and backed by the lifetime guarantee.

Skip it if you think in MOA, if you need elevation range more than magnification, or if the simpler PR2 pattern suits how you shoot.
