Description

The Leupold Mark 4HD SFP Illum TMR in 2.5-10×42 is item 183737. Read the next paragraph before you buy it, because Leupold sells a scope whose name differs from this one by a single letter and which behaves completely differently.

SFP or FFP: the Leupold Mark 4HD SFP Illum TMR is the second focal plane one

Item 183737, this scope, is SECOND focal plane. Item 183738 is FIRST focal plane. Everything else Leupold publishes about the two is identical: same 2.5-10x, same 42 mm objective, same 30mm tube, same M5C3 turret, same illuminated TMR reticle, same fixed 150 yard parallax, same 21 ounces, same 12.5 inches.

The difference is not cosmetic. On a second focal plane scope the TMR subtensions are only correct at one magnification. On a first focal plane scope they are correct at every magnification. If you range or hold with the reticle and buy the wrong one, every hold you take will be wrong at every power except one.

We carry both, and both listings now say which is which in the title. Check the item number on your invoice if you are ever unsure.

What second focal plane buys you here

The reticle keeps the same apparent thickness from 2.5x to 10x. It never thins out to a hair at the bottom of the range, which on a scope with a 2.5x low end is a genuine advantage for fast, close shooting.

Find the magnification your subtensions are calibrated for, mark the ring, and leave it there whenever you intend to use them. Used that way the Leupold Mark 4HD SFP Illum TMR is quick and entirely predictable.

Eight illumination settings run from a CR2032 through a push button, rated 1600 hours on low, 1000 on medium and 300 on high.

Turrets, travel and parallax

Elevation is the M5C3: locking, with a revolution indicator and a set screw rezero. Windage is capped. Clicks are 0.1 MIL on both axes, matching the mil-based TMR.

Total travel is 24.7 MIL, or 85 MOA, in both directions, at 10 MIL per revolution. Equal elevation and windage range is unusual and useful: you are not rationing windage the way you are on the longer Mark 4HD scopes.

Parallax is FIXED and set parallax-free at 150 yards. There is no side focus. That is the same arrangement as the first focal plane version and it keeps the scope light and simple.

Glass and dimensions

Magnification runs 2.5x to 10x behind a 42 mm objective on a 30mm main tube. Eye relief is 3.6 inches at the bottom and 3.9 at the top. Field of view is published at 44.8 feet at 2.5x and 11 feet at 10x, per 100 yards.

The Leupold Mark 4HD SFP Illum TMR weighs 21 ounces and measures 12.5 inches, with 6 inches of mounting space split 1.7 front and 2 rear. That is genuinely light for a Mark 4HD.

Three published figures worth flagging

First, the elevation dial travel limit is published as 28.7 MIL against a total elevation travel of 24.7 MIL. A dial limit cannot exceed the range it sits inside. One of the two numbers is wrong.

Second, the low-magnification field of view is published as 44.8 feet here and 42.2 feet on the mechanically identical first focal plane version. Focal plane does not change field of view, so those cannot both be right.

Third, the specification table says Daylight Bright Illumination: No and carries no night vision row and no motion sensor row, while the marketing copy on the same page describes night vision support and a five minute auto-off. We report the spec rows and note that the prose disagrees.

Honest notes

No BDC dial is included and the scope is not Custom Dial System compatible. No finish colour, coating list or light transmission figure is published either, so we print none of them. This page carries no warranty sentence at all, unusually, though the guarantee is the same lifetime one.

A 30mm tube means 30 mm rings, not the 34 mm the larger Mark 4HD scopes take. If you are moving this between rifles, the mounts will not carry over.

Who this scope suits

Designated marksman and general-purpose rifle builds where the magnification gets set and left, shooters who want a lit reticle that stays the same size through the zoom, and anyone who prefers a light, short scope to a heavy one.

Skip it if you range or hold with the reticle across changing magnifications. That is what the first focal plane version is for, and it is the reason this page leads with the distinction.
