Description

The Leupold Mark 4HD FFP PR1-MOA in 2.5-10×42 is item 183741, the minute-of-angle member of a three-scope family that is otherwise easy to confuse. All three are 30mm tube, fixed parallax, 21 ounces and 12.5 inches.

Three Mark 4HD 2.5-10×42 scopes, and which is which

This one, item 183741, is the M1C3 turret in 1/4 MOA with a PR-1MOA reticle, first focal plane, no illumination. Item 183738 is the M5C3 in 0.1 MIL with an illuminated TMR, first focal plane. Item 183737 is the M5C3 with an illuminated TMR in SECOND focal plane.

So the Leupold Mark 4HD FFP PR1-MOA is the only one of the three that works in minutes, and the only one without a battery. If you dial in MOA, it is the only one of the three you can use properly.

All three share the fixed 150 yard parallax and the 30mm tube. None of them has side focus. Rings interchange freely across the three.

What a light first focal plane scope buys you

At 21 ounces and 12.5 inches this is the lightest scope in the Mark 4HD line. It puts first focal plane subtensions on a rifle you can carry, which most precision optics do not.

Being first focal plane, the PR-1MOA subtensions are true at every magnification. A 4 MOA hold is 4 MOA at 4x and at 10x. The cost is a fine reticle at 2.5x, and with no illumination there is nothing lit to help you find it in poor light.

Field of view is 42.2 feet at 2.5x, narrowing to 11 feet at 10x, per 100 yards. That is a genuinely wide bottom end for a first focal plane scope.

Turrets, travel and parallax

Elevation is the M1C3: locking, with a revolution indicator. Windage is capped, so it will not walk on a rifle that gets handled. Total travel is 85 MOA, or 24.7 MIL, in both directions.

Equal elevation and windage range is unusual and useful: you are not rationing windage against a crooked base the way you are on the longer Mark 4HD scopes. Elevation moves 25 MOA per revolution with a 71.5 MOA dial travel limit.

Parallax is FIXED and set parallax-free at 150 yards. There is no side focus on the Leupold Mark 4HD FFP PR1-MOA, which is the right call on a scope that tops out at 10x and keeps it light.

Two gaps in the published data

First, and worth knowing before you buy: Leupold publishes an elevation click value of 1/4 MOA for this scope and publishes NO windage click value at all. The row is simply absent. It is almost certainly 1/4 MOA like every comparable model, but we are not going to state a figure the manufacturer does not.

Second, windage is published at 24 MOA per revolution against 25 MOA for elevation, on the same turret system. The same one-minute mismatch appears across several M1C3 scopes in the range. We report it as published rather than rounding both to the tidier number.

Custom BDC dial compatibility is also not published for this item. No BDC dial is included and the scope is not Custom Dial System compatible.

Honest notes

Eye relief is 3.6 inches at the bottom and 3.9 at the top. Mounting space is 6 inches, split 1.7 front and 2 rear. A 30mm tube means 30 mm rings, not the 34 mm the larger Mark 4HD scopes take.

Without illumination and without parallax adjustment, this is a simpler optic than the rest of the family. That is the point of it. No finish colour, coating list or light transmission figure is published, so we print none of the three.

Who this scope suits

MOA shooters who want first focal plane holds on a rifle they carry, designated marksman builds, and anyone working inside 600 yards who values a wide 2.5x bottom end. The Leupold Mark 4HD FFP PR1-MOA is waterproof and fogproof and backed by the lifetime guarantee.

Skip it if you dial in mils, if you want an illuminated reticle, or if you need parallax adjustment for close work.
