Smith Wesson Model 350 Legend X Frame stainless ported X-Frame revolver in 350 Legend

The Smith Wesson Model 350 Legend X Frame is the first production revolver chambered for 350 Legend, built on the enormous X-Frame that Smith and Wesson originally developed for the 500. It is a purpose-built handgun hunting revolver aimed squarely at the straight-wall cartridge states.

Smith Wesson Model 350 Legend X Frame Why 350 Legend in a Revolver

Three fifty Legend was designed for straight-wall cartridge deer hunting regulations, and it has been a rifle cartridge since launch. Putting it in a revolver was not obvious, and the Smith Wesson Model 350 Legend X Frame is the first production gun to do it. For hunters in states where straight-wall rules apply, it means a handgun that uses the same ammunition as the rifle already in the safe.

The cartridge itself is efficient rather than brutal. It produces meaningful energy on medium-sized game without the recoil of a 44 Magnum or the muzzle blast of a 500, and it does so with modest powder charges. On an X-Frame, recoil is genuinely mild for a hunting handgun.

Capacity is seven rounds in a fluted cylinder, which is two more than a J-frame and one more than most traditional hunting revolvers. The cylinder is cut for moon clips, and clips are included.

The X-Frame and the Ported Barrel

The X-Frame is the largest revolver frame Smith and Wesson builds, developed to contain the 500 S&W Magnum. Chambering something considerably milder in it means the frame is working well within its limits, and all that mass goes straight into absorbing what recoil there is.

The 7.5 inch barrel is ported. Gas venting upward counteracts muzzle rise, which on a hunting revolver means faster recovery for a follow-up shot and, just as importantly, a sight picture that does not disappear on you. Porting does vent gas and flash upward, which is more noticeable in low light, and it adds ports to the cleaning routine.

A red ramp front sight gives a bright, fast aiming point against dark game and dark backgrounds, which is exactly the situation a hunting revolver faces at dawn and dusk.

Moon clips are the reload system here. A clip holds all seven cartridges as a single unit, so loading and unloading is one motion rather than seven, and empties eject together rather than requiring you to pick out cases.

Shooting and Hunting With the Smith Wesson Model 350 Legend X Frame

The first thing shooters notice is how little it moves. An X-Frame is a great deal of steel, the barrel is ported, and 350 Legend is not an especially punishing cartridge to begin with. The combination produces a hunting revolver that is genuinely pleasant to shoot from a rest, which matters when you are working up a load and confirming zero.

The 7.5 inch barrel gives a long sight radius and lets the cartridge reach the velocity it was designed for. Combined with the red ramp front sight, it makes precise shot placement at practical handgun hunting ranges straightforward for a shooter who has put in the practice.

Moon clip reloads are worth practising deliberately. The motion is different from a speedloader and it is much faster once learned, but it rewards a consistent grip and a positive push. Buy more clips than you think you need and keep a loading tool for stripping empties out of them.

Setup and Maintenance

Many hunters will want an optic. A red dot suits the ranges a hunting revolver works at and removes the front sight focus problem that limits a lot of shooters as their eyes age. Check what mounting options are available for this frame before buying a sight.

Cleaning takes a little more attention than a plain-barrelled revolver. The ports collect carbon faster and benefit from a nylon brush and solvent after every outing rather than an occasional deep scrub.

Keep the cylinder face and the forcing cone clean, since carbon build-up there can eventually bind the cylinder or affect accuracy. Check that the ejector rod stays tight, and sort your moon clips regularly, discarding any that have been bent or stepped on. A damaged clip will feel like a problem with the revolver.

Why Buyers Choose the Smith Wesson Model 350 Legend X Frame

Straight-wall cartridge regulations in several Midwestern states make 350 Legend legal for deer hunting where bottleneck rifle cartridges are not. A revolver in the same chambering as your rifle is a genuinely practical combination, and worth checking against your own state handgun hunting rules.

This is a large, heavy revolver. That weight is exactly why it is comfortable to shoot, and it is also why it is a hunting and range gun rather than something you carry on a belt all day.

Moon clips are consumable. They bend, and a bent clip will bind the cylinder, so buy spares and check them regularly. That is the price of the reload speed and the ejection convenience they buy you.

Who Should Buy It

The Smith Wesson Model 350 Legend X Frame suits handgun hunters, particularly in straight-wall cartridge states: hunters who already own a 350 Legend rifle, anyone who wants a mild-recoiling hunting revolver, and shooters who appreciate the X-Frame platform without the punishment of a 500.
