Description
The Savage A17 Sporter 17 HMR is a semi-automatic rimfire rifle with a 22-inch sporter carbon steel barrel, a gray laminate sporter stock, a 10-round rotary magazine, and 2-piece weaver-style scope bases for easy optic mounting. It weighs about 6.5 lbs and is built to deliver fast follow-up shots with real accuracy.
Savage A17 Sporter 17 HMR Overview
The A17 was the first high-performance semi-automatic rimfire designed specifically for the 17 HMR cartridge, and it changed what shooters expect from a fast-firing varmint rifle. Its delayed-blowback design handles the pressure of the 17 HMR safely with any factory load. The 17 HMR launches a light, fast bullet on a remarkably flat trajectory, which makes it a favorite for groundhogs, prairie dogs, crows, and other small varmints out past 150 yards.
Semi-Auto Action
The delayed-blowback action holds the bolt closed a fraction longer than a simple blowback design, which is what lets this rifle run safely and reliably with high-pressure magnum rimfire loads. A hard chrome bolt and case-hardened receiver resist wear and keep the action running smoothly for years.
Barrel
The 22-inch sporter carbon steel barrel has a 1:9″ twist matched to 17 HMR bullets and a satin finish. The sporter profile keeps the rifle light and well balanced for carrying in the field. The barrel is button-rifled for uniform grooves and consistent accuracy.
Stock and Fit
The gray wood laminate stock is stiff, stable, and handsome, and laminate resists moisture and warping better than solid wood. Each stock shows its own grain pattern, so no two rifles look exactly alike. A 13.5″ length of pull fits a wide range of adult shooters.
Trigger
Savage’s user-adjustable AccuTrigger lets you set your own pull weight for a crisp, clean break, a big advantage on small targets at long range. The center safety blade helps prevent accidental discharge, and the light, predictable pull helps you shoot this rifle as accurately as it is capable of shooting.
Rotary Magazine
The 10-round rotary magazine feeds smoothly and sits nearly flush with the bottom of the stock, so it does not snag on brush or get in the way when shooting from a rest. Carry a spare or two for long days in a prairie dog town, and drop the magazine to unload quickly and safely between stands.
Optics Ready
Two-piece Weaver-style bases come installed from the factory, so mounting a rimfire scope is quick and simple. Pair the rifle with a quality rimfire scope to take full advantage of its accuracy.
Care and Cleaning
Rimfire ammunition leaves more fouling than most centerfire loads, so a little routine care keeps the Savage A17 Sporter 17 HMR cycling smoothly and shooting accurately. After a range session, wipe down the bolt and chamber area, run a few patches through the bore, and put a light coat of oil on exposed metal. Store the rifle in a dry place, check that the action screws stay snug, and it will give you years of dependable service.
