Description
The Taurus Raging Hunter 357 8.37 Black is the long-barrelled, seven-shot .357 on the large Raging frame, finished in matte black oxide throughout with a black anodized barrel shroud. The Picatinny rail is machined into the top of that shroud, so a scope or a red dot mounts without a base, and the barrel is ported from the factory.
Eight and three eighths of an inch is where .357 Magnum finally does everything it is capable of. This is the barrel length the cartridge was developed with, and out of it a heavy magnum load behaves like a light rifle round.
Part number 2-357081RH, UPC 725327617600. One left.
What the Taurus Raging Hunter 357 8.37 Black is
- Seven shots of .357 Magnum, also rated for .38 Special +P
- 8.37-inch ported barrel inside a black anodized shroud
- Picatinny rail machined into the shroud – no separate mount needed
- Matte black oxide cylinder and matte black oxide stainless steel frame
- Black rubber grip with the cushioned insert
- Dual cylinder lockup, front and rear
- Adjustable rear sight, transfer bar safety, exposed hammer

Why the long barrel changes what .357 Magnum is
- Out of a 2-inch snub a .357 load wastes its powder; out of the Taurus Raging Hunter 357 8.37 Black it does not. A snub load wastes most of its powder as muzzle flash and does little a good .38 +P would not. Out of 8.37 inches it burns properly and the velocity difference is enormous
- Seven rounds rather than six, because the large Raging frame has room for the extra chamber in this calibre
- The long sight radius and the heavy barrel make it a genuinely accurate revolver – this is the configuration people shoot at 100 yards
- Recoil is mild for a magnum because the gun is heavy and ported. .357 out of a gun this size is a pleasant afternoon
- Ported and long is still loud. Hearing protection outdoors is not optional, and anyone stood beside you will want theirs too

Practice loads and hunting loads
The Taurus Raging Hunter 357 8.37 Black chamber also takes .38 Special, and on a gun this heavy .38 is close to recoilless. Use it for the volume shooting and save the magnum loads for zeroing and for hunting. You will shoot better and it will cost you a great deal less.
For hunting, the heavier bullets are the ones that benefit most from this barrel – a 158 or 180 grain load gets the full length of barrel to accelerate in and arrives with authority. Both cartridges are dimensioned and pressure-rated by SAAMI.
Mount something on it
The rail is the reason to buy this over an ordinary long-barrelled .357. A red dot makes it far easier to shoot well at distance than iron sights do, and a low-power scope turns it into a hundred-yard deer gun in states that allow handgun hunting. Nothing needs drilling, tapping or gunsmithing – the rail is part of the barrel shroud.
The rest of the Raging Hunter range
The same barrel length in camouflage is the 8.37-inch .357 in DT Camo, and shorter versions are the 6.75-inch and the 5-inch. In two-tone there is the two-tone .357. For a bigger cartridge on the same frame, look at the .44 Magnum at 8.37 inches.
Why the Taurus Raging Hunter 357 8.37 Black earns its place
- Seven rounds from the Taurus Raging Hunter 357 8.37 Black, out of a barrel long enough to use all of the powder
- A factory Picatinny rail, which is the single most useful thing on a hunting revolver
- Dual cylinder lockup, so it stays in time under a steady diet of magnum loads
- Cheap, pleasant practice with .38 Special in the same chambers
- One left, and the distributor is out of them
This is a hunting and long-range revolver. It is far too large to carry concealed, it is not a home defence gun, and nobody should buy it expecting either. With a scope or a dot on the rail it is a deer gun inside a hundred yards and a superb range revolver at any distance.
The honest limitation is that .357 Magnum is a marginal big-game cartridge. It is entirely adequate on deer and hogs at sensible ranges with good bullets, and it is not a .44 or a .454. Know your own limits and the cartridge’s before you take it into the field.
