Description
Federal Personal Defense 410 4 Shot shells are Federal Premium Personal Defense loads built specifically for 410 handguns. Each 2-1/2 inch shell carries 7/16 ounce of number 4 shot, about 59 pellets, of copper-plated lead at a published muzzle velocity of about 950 feet per second. Each box holds 20 rounds.
Made for 410 Revolvers
The 410 handgun has become a popular home and personal defense option, and Federal designs these loads around the short barrels and revolver cylinders those guns use. The hull design, brass thickness and payload are all tuned for handgun-length barrels rather than full-length shotguns.
Copper plating helps the lead pellets hold their shape as they travel down the barrel, which supports tighter, more consistent patterns at the short distances where a defensive handgun is used.
Special brass heads are designed for smooth extraction, so spent hulls clear the cylinder easily when you reload under stress.

Defensive Handgun Tips
Use Federal Personal Defense 410 4 Shot only in firearms chambered for 2-1/2 inch or longer 410 shells. Many 410 revolvers are chambered for 2-1/2 inch shells only, so check your cylinder before loading.
Pattern your handgun at realistic home-defense distances, such as 3, 5 and 7 yards, so you know how the load spreads.
Practice reloading your revolver smoothly, and keep spare rounds where you can reach them quickly.
Check your local laws on carrying and transporting firearms and ammunition.
Federal Personal Defense 410 4 Shot ammo is a smart choice for owners of 410 revolvers who want a load built for that platform.
Number 4 shot puts about 59 pellets in each shell, creating a wide, dense pattern at close range. Some 410 revolver owners prefer that pattern for home defense, where shots are short and over-penetration is a concern.
The 2-1/2 inch length fits revolvers that are not chambered for 3 inch shells, which covers many popular 410 handguns. Check your cylinder markings before loading Federal Personal Defense 410 4 Shot shells.
Many 410 revolvers can also fire 45 Colt cartridges, which gives owners flexibility. Some people load the first chambers with shotshells and the rest with 45 Colt, while others stick with one load. Whatever you choose, practice with the exact combination you plan to keep in the gun.
Shot patterns from a short revolver barrel spread faster than they do from a long shotgun barrel. At typical across-the-room distances, the pattern stays compact, but it opens up quickly as range increases. Test Federal Personal Defense 410 4 Shot shells at the distances that matter in your home so you understand how they perform.
Keep your revolver clean, especially the cylinder and forcing cone, since plastic and lead residue from shotshells can build up over time. A clean cylinder makes loading and extraction smoother.
Finally, think about safe storage. A quick-access safe keeps a defensive handgun available to you while keeping it away from children and unauthorized users.
