Affordable Slug Power for Deer Season

Federal built the Power-Shok slug line to give hunters dependable rifled slug performance at a bargain price. These are full-bore lead slugs designed for use in smoothbore barrels, which means they work in the same pump, semi-auto or single-shot shotgun you already use for birds, as long as it is chambered for this shell length.

The rifled hollow point design uses a soft lead slug with a hollow nose. The soft lead and hollow point help the slug expand on impact, and the large frontal area of a full-bore slug hits hard on deer, hogs and similar game.

The ribs on the outside of the slug let it swage down through chokes more easily. Many hunters get their best groups from an improved cylinder or cylinder bore, or a smooth slug barrel with rifle sights or an optic.

Slug Hunting Tips

Use Federal Power-Shok 12ga 1oz Rifled Slug only in shotguns chambered for 2-3/4 inch or longer 12 gauge shells.

Sight in with this exact slug before the season. Different slugs can hit several inches apart from the same gun.

Keep shots within the range where you can hold a tight group, often about 75 to 100 yards with a smoothbore.

Check your state regulations, since some areas require slugs for deer hunting and others set specific rules for shotgun seasons.

Federal Power-Shok 12ga 1oz Rifled Slug ammo is a dependable choice for deer and hog hunters who want a hard-hitting rifled slug without paying premium prices.

Before opening day, spend a session at the range with Federal Power-Shok 12ga 1oz Rifled Slug slugs. Shoot from a rest at 50 yards first, then move back to the longest distance you expect to shoot. Let the barrel cool between groups, since a hot shotgun barrel can shift your point of impact.

Recoil from a full-power slug is noticeable. A good recoil pad, a firm shoulder mount and practicing from the positions you will hunt from all help you shoot better groups and stay comfortable.

Many hunters carry a few Federal Power-Shok 12ga 1oz Rifled Slug shells in a separate pocket from their birdshot, so there is no chance of mixing them up in the field. Keep shells dry and in their box until you load up.

Buying several boxes from the same lot helps keep your point of impact consistent from one season to the next.

A full-bore lead slug also works well on hogs, which often travel in groups and can be tough to put down. With a slug gun zeroed and a box of Federal Power-Shok 12ga 1oz Rifled Slug shells, you have a practical setup for both deer camp and feral hog control.
