Description

A-Zoom 30 Carbine Snap Caps are solid aluminum dummy rounds machined to 30 M1 Carbine dimensions, two to a pack. M1 Carbines are mostly eighty year old rifles at this point, and dry firing one on an empty chamber is a fast way to find out what a broken firing pin costs.
How A-Zoom 30 Carbine Snap Caps Are Built
Each round is CNC machined from solid aluminum billet to full cartridge dimensions and hard anodized red. One piece, no separate case head, no plastic body, so nothing shears off and leaves a case body sitting in the chamber of a rotating-bolt carbine.
The primer end holds a proprietary polymer cushion instead of a live primer, rated by A-Zoom for over three thousand strikes. It decelerates the firing pin roughly the way a real primer does rather than letting it slam into the bolt face. On a GI carbine with an original pin, that is not an abstract concern.
The red anodizing makes A-Zoom 30 Carbine Snap Caps obviously inert at a glance, which is worth having when live 30 Carbine is on the same bench and the two cartridges are physically small enough to get mixed up.
They are also dimensionally honest. A dummy that does not headspace or feed like the real cartridge tells you nothing about the rifle, so A-Zoom holds these to the same tolerances as the rest of the line rather than treating them as a novelty item.
Where Two Rounds Earn Their Keep
Feeding is the classic M1 Carbine complaint, and most of it traces to magazines rather than the rifle. Old GI magazines with tired feed lips, aftermarket thirty rounders and reproduction fifteens all vary, and cycling A-Zoom 30 Carbine Snap Caps by hand is the fastest way to sort a good magazine from a bad one without burning ammunition.
They are also useful for checking the rest of the action. The carbine uses a short-stroke gas piston and a rotating bolt, and hand cycling dummies shows whether the bolt is rotating fully into battery and whether the extractor is actually grabbing the rim before you take it to the range.
Collectors have a quieter use for them. Working the action on a rifle you would rather not shoot much is how you confirm everything functions, and a machined dummy round lets you do that without introducing chamber wear or powder residue into a gun that gets cleaned once a decade.

Field Notes
Firing pins are the real reason to own these. Original GI carbine pins are getting harder to find and reproduction quality varies, so dry firing on a snap cap rather than an empty chamber is straightforward preservation of a rifle that is not getting any younger.
Storing the carbine with the hammer down on a dummy round keeps the mainspring relaxed rather than leaving the action cocked in the safe. It is a small habit and A-Zoom 30 Carbine Snap Caps make it a cheap one.
The polymer cushion is a wear item. When the face is deeply cratered and stops rebounding, retire that round instead of continuing to hammer a dead cushion.
Working on other classic rifles? The line also covers 30-30 Winchester and 303 British. Construction details are published by A-Zoom.
For anyone keeping an M1 Carbine running, A-Zoom 30 Carbine Snap Caps are cheap insurance and a genuinely useful diagnostic tool. MAG5 Firearms stocks them as manufacturer item PA12225 in the two pack.
