$32.44

A 100 grain FTX at 1125 fps for about 281 ft-lbs, loaded specifically so a small light 9mm stays controllable. The Flex Tip still resists clogging through heavy clothing, and low flash propellant keeps your night vision intact. 25 rounds per box.

Description

The Hornady Critical Defense 9mm Lite is built for the pistol a lot of people actually carry: small, light and unpleasant to shoot with full power ammunition. A 100 grain FTX at 1125 fps produces about 281 ft-lbs with a noticeably softer recoil impulse, and the bullet still opens through heavy clothing.

Hornady Critical Defense 9mm Lite Overview

Hornady item 90240 loads a 100 grain FTX bullet to a nominal 1125 fps, producing roughly 281 ft-lbs at the muzzle. Twenty five rounds per box.

Hornady publishes the curve from a four inch test barrel: 1125 fps and 281 ft-lbs at the muzzle, 1003 fps and 224 ft-lbs at fifty yards, and 922 fps and 189 ft-lbs at a hundred.

Lite is a real specification rather than a label. Hornady drops from the standard Critical Defense 115 grain bullet to 100 grains and tunes the charge to suit, which cuts the recoil impulse while keeping enough velocity for the FTX to do its job.

There is a strong argument that the best defensive load is simply the one you will practise with. A micro compact pistol loaded with punishing ammunition tends to stay unfired, and a gun its owner cannot shoot well is not doing much good.

Low Recoil 9mm Ammo Ballistics

At 1125 fps a 100 grain bullet produces about 281 ft-lbs, from grains times velocity squared divided by 450437. The standard 115 grain Critical Defense runs about 1140 fps for roughly 332 ft-lbs, so the Lite version gives up around fifteen percent of the energy.

Recoil is what you get back, and momentum is the measure that matters to the shooting hand. 100 grains at 1125 fps gives 112,500 grain-feet per second against 131,100 for the 115 grain load, about fourteen percent less.

In a full size pistol that difference barely registers. In a twelve ounce micro compact it is the difference between a pleasant range session and a box of ammunition that sits unfired in a drawer.

Short barrels cost less here than with a slower cartridge. A three inch micro compact will chronograph perhaps sixty feet per second below the four inch figure, which leaves low recoil 9mm ammo of this type comfortably inside the window where the FTX opens.

Why The 100 Grain FTX Bullet Still Opens Reliably

The FTX bullet answers the oldest failure mode in hollow points. Fired through heavy clothing, a conventional cavity can pack full of fabric, and the bullet then behaves like ball ammunition and passes straight through without opening.

Hornady fills the cavity with a soft polymer Flex Tip. There is nothing for fabric to pack into, and on impact the tip is driven rearward into the bullet, pushing the jacket open from the inside out. Expansion happens because of the tip rather than despite the clothing.

That mechanism matters most at exactly these velocities. A fast heavy bullet has energy to spare for opening a conventional hollow point; a 100 grain FTX bullet at 1125 fps does not, and the Flex Tip is what makes a lighter, gentler load viable at all.

Hornady also loads low flash propellant and uses nickel plated cases. The flash suppression protects your night vision in a dark room, and the bright case mouths make a loaded chamber easier to confirm by eye in poor light.

Penetration is the honest trade. A 100 grain bullet does not drive as deep as a 147 grain load, and Hornady tunes the FTX for moderate expansion so that it still reaches useful depth rather than opening wide and stopping short.

Put together that is the whole design: reduced recoil 9mm defensive ammunition that still expands, still reaches depth, and does not blind you in the dark.

Pistols That Suit This Compact Pistol Carry Load

This is standard pressure 9mm, safe in any pistol chambered for the cartridge in sound working order. It is aimed at the small carry guns: the Sig P365 and P938, the Smith & Wesson Shield and Bodyguard 2.0, the Springfield Hellcat, the Ruger LCP Max in 9mm and the Glock 43 and 43X.

It works equally well in a full size pistol, and some shooters keep it for that reason alone. New shooters, anyone with hand or wrist problems, and anyone recovering from an injury can practise with it comfortably.

One thing to confirm in a very light or heavily tuned pistol is that the slide cycles fully. A reduced power load generates less energy to work the action, and while Hornady loads this to function reliably, a gun with a heavy aftermarket recoil spring may not agree.

For a compact pistol carry load the practical question is always the same: can you get the sights back on target quickly? That is what the reduced recoil buys, and it matters more than the fifty foot pounds of energy given up to get it.
