Description
Browning Golden Clays Handicap 12 Ga is the fast, heavy member of the Browning Golden Clays family. Each 2-3/4 inch shell carries 1-1/8 oz of number 7.5 alloyed lead shot at 1,250 fps, making it a strong choice for handicap trap and long clay targets. It comes in a 25 round box.
Who Makes Browning Golden Clays Handicap 12 Ga
Browning ammunition is produced under licence by Winchester, part of Olin, in the United States. Golden Clays is Browning premium competition line, and Browning describes it as built to deliver tight patterns and maximum target-breaking energy.
The shot is alloyed with antimony, which hardens the lead and reduces pellet deformation as the charge travels down the barrel. Round pellets fly straighter, which means tighter, more consistent patterns. That matters most from the back fence, where targets are further away and every pellet counts.
The shell uses a four-petal, one-piece competition wad. Browning says it delivers uniform velocities and consistent shot release, so you get the same pattern from one shot to the next.
Golden Clays has a long history with American clay shooters, and Browning relaunched the line as a modern premium target shell. Browning Golden Clays Handicap 12 Ga sits at the top of that range for shooters who need extra speed and payload from long distances.
Specifications and Performance
The published specification is 12 gauge, 2-3/4 inch shell length, 1-1/8 oz of number 7.5 shot at 1,250 fps. That is a full trap payload moving faster than standard 1,145 or 1,200 fps target loads, which helps when you are shooting from 25 yards or more.
Retailers describe this version as the Handicap Performance Target load. Browning also offers a lighter 1,200 fps Golden Clays shell with the same payload for 16 yard trap and skeet, which is more comfortable for long practice days.
The shells use brass-coloured high base heads and a plastic hull. Many trap shooters reload premium target hulls several times, so if you reload, keep your empties sorted by brand and type for consistent results.

Field Notes
A faster 1-1/8 oz load produces more recoil than a light target shell. Over a 100 or 200 target event that adds up, so many shooters use this load only from handicap yardage and switch to a lighter load for 16 yard singles. A good recoil pad and a gas gun help.
If you shoot doubles trap or long sporting clays stations, Browning Golden Clays Handicap 12 Ga can also help on the second, more distant target. Some shooters carry two loads at a station and pick the faster one for the far bird, but always check event rules on shell types first.
For trap shooting from distance, a modified or improved modified choke is a common starting point, and many handicap shooters go tighter. Pattern your gun with this load at the distances you shoot to see where it centres and how dense it is.
These are lead target loads. They are intended for clay targets and are not suitable for waterfowl, which require non-toxic shot. Some ranges limit shot size or require lead recovery, so check the rules where you shoot.
Store shells cool and dry. Buyers must be at least 18 for shotgun ammunition, and some states add extra rules for ammunition purchases.
