Description

The American Tactical Alpha Maxx is an AR-15 pattern pistol in 5.56 NATO built around a 10.5-inch barrel and a metal-reinforced polymer receiver set. It ships with a 60-round magazine, an adjustable pistol brace and flip-up sights, which means it is ready to shoot out of the box rather than needing a shopping list first.

American Tactical Alpha Maxx barrel, handguard and receivers

10.5-inch barrel in 5.56 NATO, which also chambers .223 Remington.

M-LOK handguard with a full-length Picatinny top rail, so optics and irons sit on one continuous plane.

Metal-reinforced polymer upper and lower receivers keep weight down without giving up the reinforcement where the stress goes.

The American Tactical Alpha Maxx uses standard AR-15 controls, so anything you already know about the platform applies.

American Tactical Alpha Maxx brace, sights and magazine

Manually adjustable pistol brace at the rear, not a shoulder stock.

Flip-up front and rear sights are included and fold out of the way when an optic is mounted.

Ships with a 60-round magazine, giving the advertised 60+1 capacity.

Standard AR-15 magazine well, so ordinary 30-round magazines work as well.

Part number ATIGAX556ML10TB60.

A 10.5-inch 5.56 barrel is the classic compromise for a braced AR pistol. It is short enough to be genuinely handy in a vehicle or a hallway, and long enough that the round still leaves the muzzle fast enough for good terminal performance inside typical defensive distances. Expect more muzzle blast than a 16-inch rifle produces, which is the usual price of the shorter barrel, and plan on hearing protection at the range accordingly.

Why it is worth considering

  • 60-round magazine, flip-up sights and a brace are all included.
  • M-LOK handguard with a full-length top rail for optics and accessories.
  • Metal-reinforced polymer receivers keep the weight manageable.
  • Standard AR-15 controls and magazine compatibility.
  • Built in the United States.

Who it suits

This suits a first AR pistol buyer who wants one purchase rather than a build, and anyone who wants a compact 5.56 for home defense. Two legal points are worth stating plainly: this is a braced pistol, not a short-barreled rifle, and fitting a shoulder stock to a barrel this short would create an SBR requiring ATF approval. MAG5 Firearms does not sell NFA items. Sixty-round magazines are also restricted in several states, so check your local magazine capacity rules before ordering.

Choosing between the American Tactical Alpha Maxx variants

American Tactical builds the Alpha Maxx in several barrel lengths. The 7.5-inch version is the most compact, this 10.5-inch model is the usual middle ground, and the 16-inch FDE rifle is the one to look at if you want a full-length barrel and a shoulder stock without any brace questions. Company information is published at American Tactical.

Short barrels are harder on ammunition consistency than long ones, so it is worth trying a couple of loads. Standard 55-grain full metal jacket such as Fiocchi 5.56 55gr FMJ-BT runs fine for practice. Spare magazines are cheap insurance: a 30-round PMAG handles better from a bench or a bag than the 60-rounder does. All firearm orders ship to a licensed FFL dealer for transfer, and MAG5 Firearms will coordinate the paperwork with the dealer of your choice.

A note on optics: the full-length Picatinny rail means a red dot, an LPVO or a magnifier can all be mounted at the height you prefer, and the flip-up sights fold flat underneath rather than having to come off. On a 10.5-inch gun a non-magnified red dot is usually the most practical choice.

The American Tactical Alpha Maxx brace, the law, and a straight answer

American Tactical Alpha Maxx 5.56 10.5 inch AR pistol with M-LOK handguard and adjustable brace

An American Tactical Alpha Maxx in this configuration is a pistol. It has a 10.5 inch barrel and an adjustable brace rather than a stock, and that distinction is the only thing keeping it out of the National Firearms Act. Fitting a shoulder stock to it creates a short-barreled rifle, which requires an approved ATF Form 1, a tax stamp and approval before the part goes on, not after.

Brace regulation has moved more than once in recent years and litigation has moved it back again. We are not going to tell you where it stands this month, because the honest answer is that it has changed since the last time most people checked. Verify the current position before you buy, and verify it again before you modify anything.

Why the American Tactical Alpha Maxx uses a 10.5 inch barrel

A 5.56 round is designed around a 20 inch barrel. Every inch you remove costs velocity, and a 10.5 inch barrel gives up a great deal of it. At close range that hardly matters; past 150 yards or so it matters a lot, because 5.56 terminal performance depends on speed.

What you buy in exchange is a firearm that is genuinely compact. An American Tactical Alpha Maxx in this configuration fits in a bag, a vehicle or a safe that will not take a rifle, and handles inside a building in a way a 16 inch gun does not. It is also loud. A short barrel dumps unburned powder at the muzzle and everyone within thirty feet will know about it, so hearing protection is not optional on this one even outdoors.

Feeding and setting up an American Tactical Alpha Maxx

The 60-round magazine in the box is a talking point rather than a practical everyday choice; most owners run standard 30-rounders and keep the drum for the range. Magpul PMAG M3 window magazines are what we hold deepest, and Fiocchi 5.56 55gr FMJ is the volume load.

If you want the same platform with a legal-length barrel and no brace question at all, the Alpha Maxx rifle in flat dark earth is the 16 inch answer. Browse the rest of our AR pistols category or the wider firearms range.
