Description
The Leupold Mark 4HD Illum PR2-MIL in 6-24×52 is item 188484. It is the illuminated version of a scope this shop already carries unlit, and one of four Mark 4HD 6-24x52s on the shelf. Sorting out which is which is the first job on this page.
Four Mark 4HD 6-24×52 scopes, and where this one sits
All four share the 34mm tube, the 52 mm objective, first focal plane glass, side focus to 25 yards, 125 MOA of internal elevation and the same 14.6 inch body. What separates them is the turret system, the reticle and whether the reticle lights up.
This one, item 188484, is the M5C3 turret with the PR2-MIL reticle, illuminated. Item 183823 is the same thing without illumination. Item 188483 is the illuminated M1C3 with a PR2-MOA reticle, and item 183822 is that one unlit.
So the choice is two questions, not one. Do you dial in mils or minutes, and do you want a lit reticle. Get the first wrong and the scope will fight you every time you correct.
The illumination
Eight brightness settings run from a CR2032 through a push button, rated 1600 hours on low, 1000 on medium and 300 on high. The manufacturer rates the illumination daylight bright, and describes Motion Sensor Technology shutting it off after five minutes of stillness and waking it on movement.
On a first focal plane scope that matters more than it sounds. At 6x a PR2-MIL reticle is genuinely fine, and a lit centre is what keeps the bottom of the zoom range usable when the light drops.
The Leupold Mark 4HD Illum PR2-MIL publishes no night vision compatibility row, though the description discusses night vision use. An absent row is not a stated answer, so ask Leupold before planning around a clip-on device.
Turrets, travel and parallax
Elevation is the M5C3: locking, with a revolution indicator and a set screw rezero. Windage is a zero-lock turret. Total elevation travel is 36 MIL, or 125 MOA, at 10 MIL per revolution with a 28.7 MIL dial travel limit.
Windage gives 18 MIL, or 65 MOA, at 10 MIL per turn. That is half the elevation range, so mount the scope level and centre the zero rather than spending windage on a crooked base.
Precision side focus adjusts parallax down to a 25 yard minimum, close enough to make the scope useful for rimfire practice as well as centrefire work at distance.
One published figure that cannot be right
The manufacturer publishes an elevation click value of 0.1 MIL and a windage click value of 1/4 MOA for this scope. A MIL scope with a MIL reticle does not have MOA windage clicks, and the mechanically identical unlit version publishes 0.1 MIL on both axes. We have printed both figures as published rather than quietly correcting the windage row, but treat this scope as 0.1 MIL throughout and confirm with Leupold if it matters to you.
Second oddity, smaller but worth knowing: Leupold publishes this illuminated scope at 27 ounces and the non-illuminated version at 27.5. An illumination module and a battery do not make a scope lighter. Both figures are as published.
Glass, size and honest notes
Magnification runs 6x to 24x. Eye relief is 3.8 inches at the bottom and 4.0 at the top. Field of view is 17.3 feet at 6x and 4.7 feet at 24x, per 100 yards. The scope measures 14.6 inches with 6.3 inches of mounting space, split 1.9 front and 2.1 rear.
No BDC dial is included and the scope is not Custom Dial System compatible, though the turret is listed as custom BDC dial compatible. No finish colour, coating list or light transmission figure is published, so we print none of the three.
Who this scope suits
Precision shooters working in mils who want a lit reticle for first and last light, and anyone who found a fine first focal plane crosshair hard to pick up at the bottom of the zoom. The Leupold Mark 4HD Illum PR2-MIL is waterproof, fogproof and backed by the lifetime guarantee.
Skip it if you think in MOA, if you would rather not carry a battery, or if the unlit version at the same specification saves you enough to matter.
