Fine Shot for Close, Fast Targets

#9 shot is the smallest common size used in clay target sports. Each ounce contains far more pellets than #8 or #7.5, which creates a very dense pattern. That density is ideal for skeet, where targets cross close to the shooter, and for sporting clays stations with short, quick presentations.

Federal’s All-American line is built for competitive trap and skeet. Its one piece Podium wad is designed for straight wall hulls, with a compression zone that cushions the shot charge at ignition for softer recoil and rounder pellets. High antimony lead resists deformation, so more pellets stay in the pattern core.

A straight wall hull and dependable Federal primer round out a shell built for consistent performance, round after round, through a long day of shooting.

Field Notes and Skeet Tips

Use Federal All American 12ga 9 Shot shells for skeet, five stand, and close range sporting clays stations. Many shooters run #9 shot on the low house and high house stations at skeet, then switch to #8 for longer targets on a sporting course.

A skeet or improved cylinder choke usually pairs best with #9 shot. Pattern your gun at 20 to 25 yards to see how evenly the pellets spread with your chosen choke.

Wear quality eye and ear protection, and pick up your hulls if you reload. Straight wall hulls are popular with reloaders, and keeping them clean and dry extends their life.

Store boxes in a cool, dry place, and keep 12 gauge shells separate from any smaller gauge ammunition to avoid dangerous mix ups.

If you shoot skeet or close range clays and want a competition grade load with dense patterns and soft recoil, Federal All American 12ga 9 Shot shells are a superb choice. Add a quality shell pouch to keep loads handy on the field.

Skeet is one of the best ways to sharpen wingshooting skills before bird season. The fast crossing angles teach you to read target speed and maintain a smooth swing, and a dense #9 pattern rewards good technique with satisfying breaks. Many upland hunters shoot a few rounds of skeet each week in late summer to tune up for opening day.

When shooting doubles, focus on breaking the first target quickly and moving smoothly to the second. Consistent ammunition helps you build reliable timing for both shots.

Clubs that host skeet leagues often stock Federal All American 12ga 9 Shot shells so members can practice and compete with the same load. Using one consistent shell across a season makes it easier to track scores and spot real improvement. If you travel to shoots, packing Federal All American 12ga 9 Shot shells you already know removes one more variable on match day.
