Description

Sig Sauer CROSS Sawtooth Rifle in moss green with carbon fiber barrel

The Sig Sauer CROSS Sawtooth Rifle was designed around a contradiction most rifles never resolve: precision rifles are heavy and hunting rifles are not accurate enough. Sig answered it with a 22 inch PROOF Research carbon fiber barrel, an alloy chassis and a folding stock that brings the whole package in at 6.9 pounds while carrying a sub MOA accuracy guarantee. In 6.5 PRC it reaches well past where most hunters will ever take a shot, and it folds to 33 inches for a pack.

Carbon Fiber Barrel And Real Weight Savings

The PROOF Research carbon barrel is the single most expensive component on this rifle and the reason it weighs what it does. PROOF wraps a thin stainless steel core in carbon fiber, which keeps the rigidity of a heavy contour barrel while shedding a large fraction of the mass. The carbon also sheds heat faster than steel, so groups hold together longer across a string of shots.

Twist rate is one turn in eight inches, which stabilizes the long, heavy 6.5 millimeter bullets that make the PRC cartridge worth shooting. The muzzle is threaded five eighths by twenty four with a ninety degree shoulder and wears a stainless steel radial brake from the factory.

Total weight comes to 6.9 pounds. That is lighter than most hunting rifles with wood or fiberglass stocks and dramatically lighter than any chassis rifle in this class. Overall length is 43.8 inches extended and 33 inches folded.

Chassis, Stock And Trigger

The folding precision stock adjusts for length of pull and comb height, uses an AR compatible reduced angle grip and locks solidly when deployed. Folding it takes the rifle from 43.8 inches to 33 inches, which is the difference between a rifle that rides inside a pack and one that has to be strapped to the outside where it snags on everything.

Up front the forend is a free floating lightened ARCA and M-LOK unit. ARCA means a tripod head or a plate clamps directly to the rail with no adapter, which matters to anyone shooting off a tripod in the field. M-LOK slots handle bipods, slings and anything else.

The two stage adjustable match trigger breaks between 2.5 and 4 pounds depending on how it is set. A 20 MOA Picatinny rail sits over the action to give a scope enough internal elevation for long range work, and the rifle feeds from a four round MDT steel magazine on the AICS pattern, so spares are easy to source.

A word on the cartridge. The 6.5 PRC pushes a 143 grain bullet around 2,960 feet per second, roughly 250 to 300 feet per second faster than a 6.5 Creedmoor from the same barrel length. That buys flatter trajectory and more retained energy past 500 yards, at the cost of more recoil, shorter barrel life and more expensive ammunition. On elk sized game at extended range it is a meaningfully better tool than the Creedmoor; on deer inside 300 yards the difference is academic.

Why Buyers Choose The Sig Sauer CROSS Sawtooth Rifle

Buyers choose the Sig Sauer CROSS Sawtooth Rifle because nothing else in the category weighs 6.9 pounds and still carries a sub MOA guarantee. Backcountry hunters who have carried an eleven pound chassis rifle up a mountain understand exactly what that number is worth.

The folding stock and ARCA forend point at the same use case. Fold it for the pack in, clamp it to a tripod at the glassing point, and the rifle works as a precision platform without a bag full of adapters.

The component list would cost a fortune assembled piece by piece. A PROOF carbon barrel, an MDT magazine, a two stage match trigger and a folding adjustable chassis add up quickly, and here they arrive as one rifle with one warranty behind it.

Who Should Buy The Sig Sauer CROSS Sawtooth Rifle

This rifle suits a backcountry hunter chasing elk and mule deer in open country, a long range shooter who wants a field rifle rather than a bench gun, and anyone who has decided that carrying weight is the limiting factor on how far they will hunt. It is not a budget rifle and it is not a plinker; it is a purpose built lightweight precision tool.
