Description

The Smith Wesson 1854 Scope Combo takes Smith & Wesson’s modern lever gun and ships it ready to hunt: a stainless 45-70 with a 20-inch threaded barrel, an M-LOK forend, a synthetic stock, and a Vortex Crossfire HD 2-7×32 scope already mounted. For a rifle meant to be carried in weather rather than admired, the stainless-and-synthetic combination is the sensible build.

What Ships With the Smith Wesson 1854 Scope Combo

The Vortex Crossfire HD 2-7×32 comes mounted from the factory, which removes the two jobs that usually delay a new hunting rifle: sourcing rings that fit and getting the eye relief right. Two to seven power is the correct range for a 45-70 — anything more magnification is wasted on a cartridge that does its work inside two hundred yards.

You still need to confirm zero yourself. A factory mount gets the scope square and level; it does not know your load or your eyes.

Everything else on the Smith Wesson 1854 Scope Combo is standard 1854: the same action, the same tube magazine and the same parts availability.

Stainless, Synthetic and Why It Matters Here

A 45-70 lever gun gets carried in bad weather more often than most rifles, because the places it makes sense — thick brush, wet timber, bear country — are wet places. Stainless on the barrel and receiver and a synthetic stock instead of walnut is the honest answer to that, and it is the main practical difference between this and the wood-stocked versions of the Smith Wesson 1854 Scope Combo.

The M-LOK forend also lets you hang a light or a bipod without drilling anything.

The 45-70 Cartridge

Forty-five seventy is a heavy, wide, slow bullet that transfers a lot of energy at short range. It is excellent on deer, hogs and bear inside lever-gun distance and it is not pleasant to shoot in volume. Recoil from a 20-inch barrel with a full-power load is stout, so most shooters keep practice sessions short or use lighter cowboy loads.

The threaded muzzle on the Smith Wesson 1854 Scope Combo gives you the option of a brake, which helps a lot, at the cost of considerably more noise.

Who the Smith Wesson 1854 Scope Combo Is For

This is a working hunting rifle, not a safe queen. It suits the hunter who wants a 45-70 ready to go without a separate trip to have glass mounted, and who would rather have stainless and synthetic than wood they have to baby. It is also a reasonable first centerfire lever gun, since the scope decision is already made for you.

If you want the classic walnut look or a commemorative, the wood-stocked 1854 variants are the ones to compare against.

Shooters comparing the Smith Wesson 1854 Scope Combo against a bolt gun should remember the lever is faster for a follow-up shot in thick cover, which is where this cartridge earns its keep.

Ammunition and Feeding

The Smith Wesson 1854 Scope Combo uses a tube magazine, so flat-point or polymer-tipped bullets only — never pointed spitzers, which can set off a primer under recoil. Factory loads in the 300 to 405 grain range cover most hunting. Lighter cowboy-action ammunition is the cheap way to practice without punishing yourself.

Lever actions are sensitive to overall cartridge length, so avoid long-seated handloads until you have confirmed they cycle.

We stock 45-70 in several weights and can put a box in with the Smith Wesson 1854 Scope Combo if you want to sight it in the day it arrives.

Optics, Slings and Carry

The Crossfire HD is a capable hunting scope that holds zero and gathers enough light for early and late shooting. A padded sling is worth buying immediately — this is a heavy rifle once the scope is on it. The M-LOK forend accepts a light or a bipod if you want one, though a bipod on a brush gun is often more trouble than it is worth.

Keep the scope caps on in thick cover; a scratched objective is the usual casualty.
