Description
The Barnes TAC-XPD 45 ACP +P 185gr load is Barnes’ personal defense round for the .45 ACP. It uses the 185 grain TAC-XP, a solid copper hollow point with a large, deep cavity that expands reliably without shedding weight. Barnes loads it to +P pressure for a rated muzzle velocity of 1100 feet per second and about 497 foot-pounds of energy. Nickel-plated cases and coated all-copper bullets help it feed smoothly, and the powder is chosen for very little muzzle flash, which matters in low light.

+P loads generate higher pressure than standard .45 ACP, which means a bit more recoil and more wear on the pistol over time. Many shooters practice with standard-pressure ball ammunition and keep a few magazines of +P defense loads for carry, making sure to shoot at least a box of the carry load to confirm point of impact and function.
A quality holster, spare magazine and regular practice are just as important as the ammunition you choose. Train with the same holster and carry position you use every day so your draw stays consistent under stress.
The .45 ACP has served as a defensive cartridge for more than a century. Its large, heavy bullets move at modest speeds, which many shooters find produces a push rather than a sharp snap in recoil. Modern expanding bullets like the TAC-XP make the most of that platform by adding reliable expansion and controlled penetration to the cartridge’s traditional strengths.
Test a few magazines of this load in your pistol at the range, paying attention to feeding from a full magazine and on the last round. Hollow points with wide cavities can behave differently than round-nose ball in some older pistols, so confirming reliability is an essential step before you trust any load for defense.

Why an All Copper Hollow Point Works
Traditional jacketed hollow points can separate, leaving the core and jacket to go different directions. An all copper hollow point is one solid piece, so it retains nearly all of its weight as it expands. Barnes says the TAC-XP penetrates and performs more consistently than other personal defense loads, and the design tends to behave the same way through clothing and other barriers.
Because it is lead free, this is also good lead free carry ammo for shooters who train at ranges with lead restrictions or who simply prefer non-lead projectiles.
Owners of 1911s, Glock 21s, Springfield XDs and other .45 ACP pistols rated for +P ammunition will get the most from this load. Always confirm your pistol is rated for +P, fire enough rounds to confirm reliable feeding in your own gun before carrying it, and follow all federal, state and local laws regarding ammunition and concealed carry.
Store this ammunition in a cool, dry place in the original box so the lot number stays with it. Rotate your carry ammunition periodically, since repeated chambering of the same round can set the bullet back in the case.
