Description

The Battle Arms Workhorse is what an AR-15 looks like when the person specifying it has actually shot one. Forged 7075-T6 receivers, a 16 inch nitride barrel in 223 Wylde, a mid-length gas system, a 15 inch free-float M-LOK rail and a B5 Bravo stock — no part of that list is the cheapest option available, and every one of them is a choice a builder would make on purpose.

223 Wylde and the Mid-Length Gas System

Two specifications on this rifle matter more than anything else and both are easy to overlook. The first is the 223 Wylde chamber: cut with the throat of a 5.56 NATO chamber but the tighter dimensions of a .223 match chamber, so it handles 5.56 pressures safely while shooting .223 more accurately than a standard 5.56 chamber would. You are not choosing between safety and accuracy, which is the compromise most AR-15s ask you to make.

The second is the mid-length gas system. On a 16 inch barrel a carbine-length system produces a sharper impulse and higher port pressure than the design really wants; mid-length moves the port forward, lengthens the dwell time and produces a noticeably softer-shooting rifle with less wear on the bolt and buffer. The Battle Arms Workhorse gets this right where a great many budget carbines do not.

Specifications

  • Model: Battle Arms Development Workhorse, WORKHORSE-017
  • Caliber: 223 Wylde (accepts 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington)
  • Barrel: 16 in, 4150 chrome-moly steel, black nitride
  • Gas system: mid length
  • Receiver: forged BAD-15, 7075-T6 aluminium, anodized
  • Handguard: 15 in free float, M-LOK at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, Picatinny at 12
  • Stock: B5 Bravo, six position
  • Grip: polymer
  • Capacity: 30 rounds, one magazine supplied
  • Finish: black

A note on the 15 inch handguard. On a 16 inch barrel that is nearly full-length coverage, which means the gas block sits under the rail and there is no exposed barrel between handguard and muzzle. The practical benefits are a longer sight radius if you run irons, more room to place a hand or a bipod where you actually want it, and nothing hot to touch by accident. It is also the specification that most obviously separates this from a budget carbine with a seven inch drop-in handguard.

Why it is worth considering

  • 223 Wylde chamber, safe with 5.56 and more accurate with .223
  • Mid-length gas system, softer impulse and less wear than carbine length
  • Forged 7075-T6 BAD-15 receiver set, not cast
  • 4150 nitride barrel, which does not chip or flake the way a coating can
  • 15 inch free-float M-LOK rail with full-length top Picatinny
  • B5 Bravo stock rather than a generic mil-spec one

Who it suits

The Battle Arms Workhorse suits the buyer who knows enough about AR-15s to recognise what these specifications cost and does not want to assemble one themselves. It is a rifle that needs nothing added to be good — the sensible upgrades a builder would make are already in it. If you are in a state requiring a fixed magazine, the same rifle is available with the BAD-MRB conversion and a 10-round magazine.

Ammunition, Magazines and Transfer

The Battle Arms Workhorse runs both 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington. For practice, 55 grain ball is the cheapest way to shoot it; for anything that needs precision, 69 to 77 grain match bullets are where the Wylde chamber earns its keep. Magazines are standard AR-15 pattern, so anything you already own will fit alongside the supplied 30-rounder.

For optics, the full-length top rail takes anything from a compact red dot to a low-power variable without needing a riser or a cantilever mount in most cases.
