Description

The Daniel Defense MK12 SPR is a modern take on the Special Purpose Rifle the Navy adopted in the early 2000s, and this California compliant version ships with a 10 round Magpul PMAG. It runs an 18 inch cold hammer forged stainless barrel with a DLC coating, a rifle-length gas system, and the DDM4 Rail 12.0 in black hard coat anodizing.
Daniel Defense MK12 SPR Barrel and Coating
The barrel is where this rifle separates itself. Daniel Defense cold hammer forges it from a proprietary stainless blend in the MK12 profile, then coats it with DLC, or diamond-like carbon. Cold hammer forging a stainless barrel is unusual and difficult, and the result is a barrel with the accuracy potential of stainless and the durability of a hammer forged bore.
DLC is a genuinely hard, low-friction coating originally developed for industrial tooling. On a barrel it resists heat, corrosion and fouling far better than phosphate, and it cleans up with much less effort. Twist is 1:7, which handles the heavy 69 to 77 grain match bullets an SPR is built to shoot.
Daniel Defense MK12 SPR Gas System and Rail
The gas system is rifle length with an MK12 low profile gas block machined from hardened 416 stainless with a black oxide finish. Rifle-length gas on an 18 inch barrel is the softest and lowest-pressure configuration available on an AR-15, which is exactly what you want on a precision-oriented rifle where sight recovery between shots matters.
The DDM4 Rail 12.0 is a 6061-T6 aluminum Picatinny rail that free floats the barrel and leaves the last six inches of barrel exposed, which is the classic SPR look and keeps weight forward of your support hand down. The receivers are mil-spec 7075-T6 aluminum, Type III hard coat anodized, and the bolt carrier group is an M16 profile, chrome lined, with a properly staked gas key.

Why Buyers Choose the Daniel Defense MK12 SPR
The original MK12 was built to give a squad designated marksman more reach than an M4 without moving to a full-size sniper rifle, and that mission has not changed. An 18 inch match-grade barrel with rifle gas and heavy match ammunition will hold groups that surprise people who think of the AR-15 as a 300 yard gun.
The cold hammer forged stainless barrel with DLC is also a real technical achievement rather than marketing. Most match ARs use a button rifled stainless barrel that shoots well but wears faster. This one is meant to hold its accuracy over a service life closer to a chrome lined barrel.
Who Should Buy It
The Daniel Defense MK12 SPR suits precision shooters in capacity-restricted states, competitors in service rifle and practical rifle events, and anyone who wants the most accurate rifle Daniel Defense builds in 5.56. It also makes an excellent coyote and varmint rifle at 7.41 pounds. If you need a compact carbine for close quarters or a lightweight patrol rifle, a 14.5 or 16 inch DDM4 will serve you better, because the SPR is deliberately built long and front-heavy.
