Description

Barnes Pioneer 44 Mag 225gr TSX is what happens when a company known for premium rifle bullets turns its attention to lever guns and big-bore revolvers. The Pioneer line exists to bring the Triple Shock X bullet to cartridges that have historically been served by cast lead and cup-and-core jacketed bullets, and the .44 Remington Magnum is a natural fit.

Why an All Copper Bullet in a 44

The Triple Shock X is an all copper hunting bullet with a hollow nose and circumferential grooves along the shank. On impact the nose peels back into four petals and the bullet holds together, typically retaining close to 100 percent of its weight. There is no jacket to separate from a lead core because there is no lead core.

That design matters in Barnes Pioneer 44 Mag 225gr TSX more than it does in most rifle cartridges. A traditional soft point launched at handgun velocity either expands reliably and then fragments on heavy bone, or it is built hard enough to penetrate and barely expands at all. A monolithic copper bullet sidesteps that compromise: it opens at a wide range of velocities and still drives straight through.

At 225 grains Barnes Pioneer 44 Mag 225gr TSX is lighter than the 240 and 300 grain bullets that dominate the cartridge. Copper is less dense than lead, so an all copper bullet of the same weight is longer. Barnes keeps the weight down to keep overall length sensible for lever action magazines and revolver cylinders while retaining the penetration that comes from a bullet that does not shed mass.

Barnes Pioneer 44 Mag 225gr TSX Specifications

Barnes Pioneer 44 Mag 225gr TSX is a 44 Remington Magnum load with a 225 grain Barnes TSX bullet, packed 20 rounds to the box. It is designed to work in both lever action rifles and revolvers, which is the defining characteristic of the Pioneer line and the reason for the flat-nose profile that feeds safely in tubular magazines.

Made by Barnes Bullets, a company that has been building monolithic projectiles since long before lead-free became a regulatory concern. The TSX has a long track record on game from whitetail through African plains species, and the grooved shank design reduces bearing surface and fouling compared with earlier solid copper designs.

Expect meaningfully higher velocity from Barnes Pioneer 44 Mag 225gr TSX from a 20 inch lever gun barrel than from a revolver. The .44 Magnum gains a great deal in a carbine, often 300 to 400 fps over a 6 inch revolver, and the TSX design takes advantage of that because it expands more aggressively with more impact velocity while still holding together.

Cost, Accuracy and Honest Caveats

The obvious drawback is price. Monolithic copper ammunition costs substantially more per round than conventional .44 Magnum loads, and there is no way around it. This is hunting ammunition, not range ammunition. Sight your rifle in with a box, confirm your zero, and shoot cheaper jacketed loads for practice with the understanding that point of impact will differ.

The copper bullet in Barnes Pioneer 44 Mag 225gr TSX can be choosy about barrel twist and throat dimensions. Because they are longer than lead bullets of the same weight, some rifles that shoot 240 grain jacketed loads beautifully will group this bullet less tightly. That is a characteristic of the design rather than a defect, but it means you should test accuracy in your own gun before committing to a season.

Expansion needs velocity. Barnes designs the TSX to open at handgun and carbine velocities, but at the long end of a revolver’s practical range the bullet is approaching the lower edge of its window. Out of a rifle barrel this is much less of a concern. Know which platform you are shooting and keep your shots inside what the velocity supports.

Hunters who want Barnes Pioneer 44 Mag 225gr TSX in a .44 Magnum lever gun or revolver on deer, hogs or black bear who want deep straight-line penetration, full weight retention and a lead free projectile.

If you want more bullet weight for heavier game, the Pioneer Lever 44 Magnum 300 Grain is the heavy option in the same line, and a Rossi lightweight .44 Magnum carbine is the kind of handy lever gun this ammunition was designed around.

Store Barnes Pioneer 44 Mag 225gr TSX the way you would any hunting ammunition: indoors, dry, stable in temperature. Copper does not corrode the way an exposed lead core can, so these tolerate a season in a hunting pack better than most, but the brass and primers still deserve dry storage between seasons.
