Description

The BCM MK12 MOD 0 is Bravo Company’s production version of the Mk 12 Special Purpose Rifle, the 18 inch designated marksman AR that US special operations units built out of accurized uppers in the early 2000s. This is the Flat Dark Earth configuration, and it follows the original recipe closely rather than reinterpreting it.

That means an 18 inch 410 stainless barrel in the MK12 contour with an IonBond coating and a 1:8 twist, a rifle length gas system, a 12 inch PRI Gen III carbon fiber free float handguard, PRI folding backup sights and a Vltor EMOD stock. It weighs about 7.7 pounds, which is remarkably light for an 18 inch rifle with a full length rail.

What the BCM MK12 MOD 0 Is Actually For

The Mk 12 exists to put accurate fire further out than a carbine while staying light enough to carry as an infantry weapon. An 18 inch stainless barrel with a 1:8 twist and heavy 77 grain match ammunition will hold groups a chrome lined carbine barrel cannot, and the rifle length gas system is the softest shooting arrangement available on an AR-15.

The PRI Gen III carbon fiber handguard is a large part of why the rifle is only 7.7 pounds. Carbon fiber is lighter than aluminum and insulates far better against a hot barrel. The trade is that it flexes more than an aluminum tube under a heavily loaded bipod, which matters if you intend to load a bipod hard on a barricade.

The stainless barrel is the other honest trade. Stainless is more accurate than chrome lined and it is also shorter lived and less corrosion resistant. On a rifle bought to shoot groups that is the right decision, but it wants cleaning and oiling in a way a phosphated chrome lined barrel does not.

Furniture, Sights and Practical Notes

PRI folding backup sights come fitted, which is unusual on a rifle at any price and genuinely useful on one built around an optic. They fold out of the way under a scope and come up in a second if the glass fails.

The Vltor EMOD stock adjusts from 35.5 to 39.5 inches overall, the grip is a BCM Gunfighter Mod 3, and the trigger is BCM’s nickel Teflon coated PNT. The bolt carrier group is MIL-SPEC Carpenter No. 158 steel, high pressure tested and magnetic particle inspected, which is the specification that actually matters on a bolt.

The BCM MK12 compensator is threaded 1/2×28 and it works. It also throws a great deal of blast sideways, which makes the rifle unpleasant to stand beside. That is the nature of the device rather than a defect, and it can be swapped for a flash hider if you prefer.

Why it is worth considering

  • A faithful production Mk 12 rather than a carbine with a longer barrel
  • Rifle length gas system, the softest shooting arrangement on an AR-15
  • An 18 inch stainless MK12 contour barrel built for heavy match ammunition
  • Only 7.7 pounds thanks to the PRI carbon fiber handguard
  • PRI folding backup sights and a Carpenter No. 158 HPT and MPI bolt fitted as standard

Who it suits

This suits the shooter who wants one AR that will hold small groups at distance and still be carried comfortably, and anyone drawn to the Mk 12 for what it is. It is not a close quarters carbine and it is not the cheapest way to own an 18 inch AR.

Ammunition, Optics and Transfer Notes for the BCM MK12 MOD 0

Feed it heavy match ammunition. The 1:8 twist and the 18 inch stainless barrel were chosen around 69 to 77 grain open tip match bullets, and that is where this rifle shows what it can do. Lighter 55 grain ball will shoot acceptably but wastes the barrel. The chamber is cut to 5.56 NATO, so both 5.56 and 223 Remington are safe in it. Cartridge and chamber standards are published by SAAMI.

Optics matter more here than on a carbine. A low power variable in the 1-8 or 2-10 range suits the rifle’s intended range, and the full length top rail means you can position it properly. Mount it on rings or a one piece mount rated for the recoil and torque them to specification; a scope that shifts under recoil will make an accurate rifle look like a poor one.

Look after the stainless barrel. It is more accurate than a chrome lined bore and less forgiving of neglect, so clean it after wet or salty conditions and keep a light film of oil in the bore for storage. Magazine capacity is restricted in several states. If you want a chrome lined working carbine instead, our BCM MID-16 MOD 0 is the hard use option, and more of our inventory is on the MAG5 Firearms shop page. The BCM MK12 MOD 0 ships to a licensed dealer of your choosing, where you will complete a 4473 and a NICS check.
