Who Makes Baschieri Pellagri Upland Game 20 Ga

Baschieri & Pellagri was founded in Bologna, Italy in 1885 and is one of the oldest shotshell makers in Europe. The company makes its own powder, wads and hulls, and its target loads are widely used in international clay competition. B&P USA imports the range into the United States.

The Upland Game line takes that competition know-how into the field. The key difference from a basic game load is the shot. Nickel plated shot is harder and rounder than plain lead, so fewer pellets deform in the barrel. Undeformed pellets fly truer, which means tighter, more even patterns at longer range.

The 7/8 oz payload is a classic 20 gauge field charge. It keeps recoil manageable in a light upland gun that you will carry for miles, while still putting enough pellets on target for birds flushing at typical ranges.

Specifications and Performance

The published specification for Baschieri Pellagri Upland Game 20 Ga is 20 gauge, 2-3/4 inch shell length, 7/8 oz of number 6 nickel plated shot and a muzzle velocity of 1,225 fps. That is a moderate velocity load, typical of quality upland shells, rather than a high velocity magnum.

Number 6 shot is a common all-round size for pheasant and quail early in the season, as well as for grouse, partridge and rabbits. Late season pheasants that flush wild may call for number 5 or a heavier load. Pattern your gun with this load to see how your choke handles it.

B&P loads the shell with its own components, including a plastic hull and a one piece plastic wad, which helps keep velocity consistent from shell to shell. Consistent velocity matters on a hunt, because it keeps your lead the same on every bird and makes your pattern more predictable.

Field Notes

These shells use lead shot, so they cannot be used for waterfowl, which require non-toxic shot under federal law. Some states and public hunting areas also require non-toxic shot for upland birds, so check local regulations before you hunt.

Make sure your shotgun is chambered for 20 gauge 2-3/4 inch or longer shells. Never mix 20 gauge and 12 gauge shells in the same pocket. A 20 gauge shell dropped into a 12 gauge chamber can lodge in the barrel, and firing a 12 gauge shell behind it can cause a serious barrel failure.

With nickel plated shot your patterns may be tighter than you are used to. An improved cylinder or skeet choke is often enough for quail over dogs, while modified suits pheasants. Shoot a few patterns at 25 and 35 yards before the season.

Premium upland hunting ammo costs more than bulk game loads. Many hunters practise on clays with cheaper target loads and save Baschieri Pellagri Upland Game 20 Ga for the field. Store shells cool and dry.

Spent hulls from a quality shell like this are also reloadable if you load your own 20 gauge, although most upland hunters simply pick them up and dispose of them. Please collect your empties in the field.
