Description
The Fiocchi 12SD18H8 Shooting Dynamics 12ga shell, item 12SD18H8, is a 12 gauge, 2-3/4 inch target load carrying 1 1/8 oz of #8 lead shot at a rated 1200 fps. Fiocchi lists it in the Exacta Heavy group, meaning the full payload is pushed at a standard 1,200 fps target speed.
Fiocchi 12SD18H8 Shooting Dynamics 12ga Overview
A full 1 1/8 ounce charge of number 8 shot puts a large number of pellets in the air, which makes this one of the most forgiving shells you can bring to a trap line or sporting course. The 1,200 fps velocity is a traditional target speed that cycles most semi-automatics and keeps recoil reasonable for the payload. Fiocchi builds Shooting Dynamics with chilled lead shot, cushioned wads and clean-burning powder in its American plant, and prices the line so shooters can practice often without buying bargain shells that pattern poorly.
Shot Size and Pattern
Number 8 shot is slightly smaller than 7.5, so the same payload carries more pellets. That denser pattern is an advantage on close and mid-range targets such as skeet, five-stand and the near stations of a sporting course, though each pellet carries a little less energy at long range. Pattern your gun on paper at the distances you shoot most, and match your choke to the target: open chokes for close stations, tighter chokes for longer trap yardage.
Payload and Recoil
A 1 1/8 ounce payload is the traditional full 12 gauge target charge, and the heaviest allowed in most trap and sporting clays events. It gives a full, forgiving pattern, but it also produces the most recoil of the common target loads. At a rated 1200 fps this is a standard target velocity. It balances pattern quality, recoil and reliable function in most semi-automatic shotguns.
Shotgun Compatibility
Fire this shell only in 12 gauge shotguns with a chamber of 2-3/4 inches or longer. It runs in break-action and pump guns without concern, and most gas-operated semi-autos cycle it reliably. Some inertia-driven and older recoil-operated designs prefer heavier loads, so test a box in your gun before match day. Never place a shell in a gun of a different gauge; a 20 gauge shell can slip past the chamber of a 12 gauge barrel and cause a dangerous obstruction.
Practice and Competition
This is a target and training load. It is well suited to 16-yard and doubles trap, skeet, sporting clays and five-stand, especially when you want a dense pattern on close and mid-range targets. Many hunters also use similar lead loads on doves and other small upland birds, but check your state regulations for legal shot types, and remember that lead shot is prohibited for waterfowl.
Consistency and Value
Shooting Dynamics is priced for volume. Buying a flat or a case and staying with one lot keeps recoil, sound and timing consistent through a season. This full-weight #8 load pairs well with a faster 7.5 load for long stations, so many shooters keep both in the truck.
Storage and Care
Store shotshells in a cool, dry place in their original boxes. Heat and humidity can affect powder and primers over time, and crushed or split hulls should never be fired. Rotate older boxes forward so they get used first.
