Berger 6mm Creedmoor 109gr LR Hybrid Target – Superb 20 Round Box

Description

Four grains of bullet weight does not sound like much, and in most cartridges it would not be. In the 6mm Creedmoor the step from 105 to 109 grains buys a meaningful jump in efficiency, and the Berger 6mm Creedmoor 109gr LR Hybrid Target is where that shows up.

Four Grains That Actually Matter

Put this beside the 105 grain Hybrid Target and the numbers are close but consistently in one direction. Muzzle velocity is nine feet per second lower, effectively identical; the G7 ballistic coefficient rises from 0.275 to 0.292 and the form factor improves from 0.925 to 0.906. You are getting a more efficient shape at the same speed, which is a rare thing to be offered.

Where that pays is past 600 yards. At 1000 the Berger 6mm Creedmoor 109gr LR Hybrid Target is still moving 1539 feet per second, comfortably supersonic, with a drop of 263 inches from a 200 yard zero. Wind drift at that distance is measurably less than the lighter bullet, and wind is what decides matches once elevation is solved.

The Long Range Hybrid line is Berger newest ogive geometry, blending tangent and secant profiles with a longer nose than the standard Hybrid. The design tolerates seating depth variation, which is what allows factory ammunition to shoot close to a tuned handload.

Berger 6mm Creedmoor 109gr LR Hybrid Target Specifications

Small rifle primers again, as with all 6mm Creedmoor. Small primer pockets hold up better at match pressures over repeated reloadings and are generally credited with slightly more consistent ignition, so this is a point in the cartridge favour if you handload.

Twist rate is 1:8 or faster and maximum cartridge overall length is 2.800 inches, so the Berger 6mm Creedmoor 109gr LR Hybrid Target feeds from standard short-action and AICS magazines without modification. Every current 6mm Creedmoor barrel meets the twist requirement.

The cartridge caveat is barrel life, and it is worth repeating rather than burying. A 6mm Creedmoor throat erodes faster than a 6.5, typically giving 1500 to 2500 rounds of match accuracy. Competitors treat barrels as consumables and budget accordingly; a shooter who expects a decade out of one barrel should look at the 6.5.

Honest Notes on This Load

Buy the Berger 6mm Creedmoor 109gr LR Hybrid Target if your matches or steel sessions run past 600 yards. At the same muzzle velocity as the 105 grain it simply performs better downrange, which makes it the default choice for long stages.

The 105 grain remains a fine option for shorter courses and is often easier to find. Inside 500 yards you will not see the difference on target, so buy whichever is available and priced sensibly.

Skip it for hunting. This is a match bullet with no expansion design, and a 6mm is a marginal hunting calibre to begin with. The 95 grain Classic Hunter is the correct choice for game in this cartridge.

Shorter courses: the Berger 6mm Creedmoor 105gr Hybrid Target. For hunting, the 95gr Classic Hunter. Berger publishes complete 109gr ballistic data on its own site.

MAG5 Firearms stocks match ammunition for practical rifle competitors. Ask about case pricing if you are shooting a full season rather than a single match.
