What Handicap Yardage Demands
A handicap target is already thirty five or forty yards out by the time you break it, and two things change at that distance. Your lead gets longer because the target has more time to travel, and pellet energy has dropped because the shot string has been decelerating the whole way. A 1250 fps handicap trap load addresses both at once by getting the payload there sooner with more velocity left when it arrives.
The cost is recoil, and it is not trivial. 1 1/8 ounces at 1250 fps out of a 2 3/4 inch hull is a stout shell, and a hundred of them in an afternoon will remind you. That is precisely why Federal builds three velocities in this line rather than one. The handicap load is a tool for a specific job, not a default, and shooting it for sixteen yard practice mostly buys you a sore shoulder.
Everything else is the same competition recipe. High antimony lead resists deformation through the forcing cone and choke so more pellets stay round and stay in the pattern, and the Podium wad has a compression zone in its base that cushions the shot column at ignition. At 1250 fps that cushioning matters more, not less, because the acceleration is harsher.

Honest Notes on Handicap Loads
Use it where it earns its keep. If you are shooting from twenty two yards or further back, Federal All American Handicap 12ga 7.5 shot is the right shell. If you are shooting sixteen yard singles, doubles or practice, the lighter 1145 or 1200 fps loads will break the same targets with less punishment and probably better scores by the end of the round.
Recoil management is a real part of shooting handicap well. A gas operated autoloader soaks up noticeably more of this shell than a fixed breech over and under, and a recoil pad or a heavier gun makes a genuine difference over a hundred targets. If you shoot a light gun and find yourself lifting your head by the third round, the shell is the first thing to look at.
Number 7.5 is the standard handicap size and there is a good reason for it. Number 8 does not carry well enough at long yardage, and larger shot thins the pattern more than the extra energy is worth. If someone tells you to shoot 8s from the twenty seven, ask them to pattern both at forty yards first.
Finally, lead restrictions. Registered trap clubs almost universally permit lead and reclaim it, but a growing number of ranges on public land require non toxic shot. Confirm before you travel to a new club with a case.
For sixteen yard targets and practice the 1200 fps 3 dram shell and the 1145 fps light load are easier on the shoulder. Full factory data is on the Federal Premium product page.
