Ammunition Designed Around the Lever Gun

The 360 Buckhammer was introduced as a straight wall cartridge that fits lever action rifles and meets straight wall hunting rules in several states. It delivers more reach and energy than older lever cartridges like the 35 Remington or 357 Magnum from a rifle, making it a strong choice for deer and black bear inside typical woods distances.

HammerDown loads are tuned for the realities of lever guns. Case geometry and a modified chamfer help rounds feed smoothly from tubular magazines and side gate loading, and the overall cartridge shape is designed for typical lever action feeding systems.

The bonded soft point bullet holds together for deep penetration and high weight retention. Federal adjusted its construction for the velocities lever action barrels produce, so the bullet expands reliably without breaking apart on heavy bone.

Field Notes and Deer Hunting Tips

Use Federal HammerDown 360 Buckhammer 220gr ammo in rifles chambered for 360 Buckhammer, including lever actions from Henry and Smith and Wesson as well as single shot rifles and pistols. Check that your state allows straight wall cartridges for the season you plan to hunt.

Zero your rifle at 100 yards and learn your drops out to 200 yards. With a 220 grain bullet at about 2,000 fps, the 360 Buckhammer is most effective inside 200 yards, where it hits with authority on deer and black bear.

Load the tube magazine carefully and avoid leaving it fully loaded for long periods, since constant spring pressure can affect the rounds at the front. Check rounds for bullet setback if they have been chambered and unloaded several times.

Practice from field positions such as sitting with shooting sticks and offhand, since lever gun hunting often means quick shots in brush and timber.

If you hunt deer or black bear with a 360 Buckhammer lever gun, Federal HammerDown 360 Buckhammer 220gr ammo is a powerful, purpose built choice for clean, reliable performance. Pair it with a quality lever action rifle and a spare box for practice.

Lever action rifles are light, quick handling and fast to cycle, which makes them a natural fit for still hunting, stand hunting in thick cover and tracking. Pairing a lever gun with Federal HammerDown 360 Buckhammer 220gr ammo gives you a modern, bonded bullet designed for those rifles, so you can take advantage of the platform without compromising terminal performance. Many hunters also appreciate the reduced recoil compared with larger bottleneck magnum cartridges.

Before season, fire at least a full magazine through your rifle to confirm smooth feeding and reliable ejection. Clean the action and check the magazine tube for debris, especially if the rifle has been stored for a while.
