Description

The Barnes VOR-TX 30-30 Win 150gr TSX FN brings modern all copper bullet construction to the cartridge that has taken more North American deer than anything else ever chambered. Barnes drives a solid copper Triple Shock X out of the muzzle at roughly 2335 fps carrying about 1816 ft-lbs of energy. The flat nose profile is what makes it safe in a tube magazine, and the copper construction is what makes it hit above its weight. Each box holds 20 rounds.

Barnes VOR-TX 30-30 Win 150gr TSX FN Overview

The projectile is machined from solid copper with a deep hollow nose capped by a flat meplat. There is no lead core to shed and no jacket to separate, so the bullet opens into four sharp petals at roughly double the original diameter and then keeps driving rather than breaking apart.

Weight retention on recovered bullets is typically close to 100 percent. That matters a great deal in a cartridge with modest velocity to begin with, because every grain the bullet keeps is energy still being carried forward into the animal.

150 Grain TSX Flat Nose Performance

The 150 grain TSX flat nose is the lighter of the two classic 30-30 weights, and in copper that is the right choice. Monolithic bullets penetrate far beyond what their weight suggests, so dropping to 150 grains buys velocity and a flatter curve without costing anything that matters on a deer.

The flat nose is not a styling decision. In a tube magazine rifle, a pointed bullet resting against the primer of the round ahead of it is a genuine hazard under recoil, which is why 30-30 ammunition has always been flat or round nosed. Barnes also machines relief grooves into the bearing surface of the Barnes VOR-TX 30-30 Win 150gr TSX projectile to lower pressure and cut copper fouling.

Why Hunters Choose 30-30 Winchester Deer Ammo

The 30-30 has been in continuous production since 1895 and remains the most sensible deer cartridge in thick country. A Marlin 336 or Winchester 94 is light, fast to point, carries easily on horseback or in a treestand, and puts five or six rounds under your hand. Inside 150 yards nothing about it is a compromise.

Where this 30-30 Winchester deer ammo improves on the old standard is the bullet. A traditional 30-30 flat nose is a soft lead core design that can shed a great deal of weight on a shoulder. Copper changes that completely, and it gives the cartridge noticeably more penetration than its reputation suggests.

It is also the answer for hunters in lead free required areas who own a lever gun and do not want to buy a new rifle to keep hunting.

Range Notes For This All Copper Lever Action Bullet

An all copper lever action bullet normally prints to a different point of impact than the lead core ammunition your rifle was probably sighted in with. Zero with this exact load, foul a clean barrel with a round or two first, then leave the sights alone.

Cycle a full magazine through the rifle before the season. Lever actions can be particular about overall length and bullet profile, and while this load is built to feed correctly, confirming it beats finding out the hard way.

Copper needs velocity to open, and the 30-30 does not have a great deal to spare. The Barnes VOR-TX 30-30 Win 150gr TSX expands reliably out to roughly 200 yards, which is beyond the practical range most people shoot this cartridge anyway. Store the ammunition cool and dry.
