Black Rain Spec+ Old Glory We The People Overview
The Spec+ Series is the Black Rain way of putting custom-shop looks on a rifle priced closer to a standard production AR. The rifles share the same forged receivers, 4150V barrels and nitrided bolt carriers, and the finish is where they stand apart. Old Glory is one of the boldest patterns in the line, made for shooters who want their rifle to stand out on the range.
Receiver and Finish
The upper and lower are Spec15 forged aluminum receivers, the strongest common way to make AR receivers. The Old Glory pattern covers the receivers and handguard in red, white and blue, with We The People across the lower. Finishes like this are usually Cerakote or a similar ceramic coating. They hold up well to handling, solvents and slings, though sharp edges may show light wear after years of use.
Barrel and Gas System
The 16 inch 4150V Chromoly barrel is the common choice for a general purpose AR: handy indoors and in a truck, yet long enough to keep good velocity at 200 to 300 yards. The rifle runs direct impingement with a .750 low profile gas block that sits under the handguard. It is not adjustable, which keeps the system simple and reliable with standard 55 and 62 grain loads.
Bolt Carrier Group
The Spec15 bolt carrier group has a salt bath nitride finish. It is hard, slick and resists corrosion, and carbon wipes off it more easily than off bare phosphate. Keep it lightly oiled and it will run through long range days without fuss.
Handguard, Trigger and Furniture
The 15 in. M-LOK slim handguard gives room for a light, a sling mount and a forward hand position. The trigger is a mil-spec G.I. unit. It is not as crisp as a match trigger, but it is reliable and easy to upgrade later. The Magpul MOE grip and stock are proven, comfortable and adjust for length of pull.
Adding Optics
The flat top upper takes a red dot, an LPVO or a magnified scope. The rifle comes without sights, so plan on adding an optic or backup iron sights before your first range trip. A red dot with a 1x to 6x LPVO covers most home defense, training and hunting roles.
Choosing Ammunition
For practice, 55 grain FMJ is the most affordable choice. For accuracy work, try 69 or 77 grain match loads. For hunting coyotes and other varmints, choose a bullet built to expand. Brass cased ammunition from a known maker is the most reliable choice in any AR.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Clean and oil the bolt every few hundred rounds and check the gas key screws now and then. Most failures in a direct impingement rifle trace back to a dry bolt, so lubrication matters more than scrubbing.
State Laws
Some states limit AR-15 rifles or magazines over 10 rounds. Check your state and local laws before you order. Pennsylvania buyers can transfer this rifle at our Collegeville shop or at any FFL.
