Description
A-Zoom 30-06 Snap Caps are solid aluminum dummy rounds cut to 30-06 Springfield dimensions, five to a pack in blue hard anodize. Five is a deliberate number here, because that is what an internal box magazine on a Springfield or a Model 70 holds.
How A-Zoom 30-06 Snap Caps Are Built
Each round is CNC machined from a solid aluminum billet to full cartridge dimensions, then hard anodized. There is no separate case head and no plastic body, so nothing can shear off and leave a case stuck in a chamber. That failure mode is what makes cheap two-piece dummies more trouble than they are worth.
The primer end holds a proprietary polymer cushion in place of a live primer, rated by A-Zoom for more than three thousand strikes. It slows the firing pin the way a primer would rather than letting it stop hard against the bolt face, which is the actual reason to dry fire with snap caps.
The blue anodizing makes A-Zoom 30-06 Snap Caps obviously inert. On a cartridge as common as 30-06, with live ammunition likely sitting on the same bench, that visual distinction is worth having.
Dimensional accuracy is what separates these from a resized case with no primer. A-Zoom holds the same tolerances across the line, so the round headspaces and extracts like real ammunition rather than rattling in the chamber and telling you nothing.
Why Five Rounds Suits a 30-06
Most 30-06 rifles are bolt guns with a four or five round internal magazine. A five pack fills the box, which means you can load through the ejection port, work the bolt through the whole stack and confirm the follower, feed rails and extractor all do their jobs under real spring pressure.
Semi-auto owners get the same benefit. An M1 Garand feeds from an eight round en bloc clip and a BAR-pattern or 742 style rifle from a detachable box, and cycling A-Zoom 30-06 Snap Caps through either is how you find a feeding problem on the bench instead of in the field.
Handloaders find another use for them. Comparing a machined dummy against your own loaded rounds is a quick sanity check on overall length and magazine fit, and cycling a dummy through the action shows whether a long-seated bullet is going to hang up on the feed rails before you build fifty of them.

Field Notes
Older rifles are exactly where this matters. Plenty of pre-war and mid-century 30-06 actions use firing pins that are no longer easy to source, so dry firing on a snap cap rather than an empty chamber is straightforward preservation.
They are also the right tool for setting up a hunting rifle. Confirming that a rifle chambers, extracts and ejects smoothly with cold hands and gloves on is a drill worth running before opening day, and A-Zoom 30-06 Snap Caps let you do it in the living room.
The polymer cushion wears out. When the face is visibly cratered and stops rebounding, retire that round instead of continuing to strike a dead cushion.
Running other rifle chamberings? The blue aluminum line also covers 308 Winchester and 223 Remington in ten packs. Construction details are published by A-Zoom.
For anyone maintaining a classic 30-06 or getting a hunting rifle ready for the season, A-Zoom 30-06 Snap Caps are the sensible buy. MAG5 Firearms stocks them as manufacturer item PA12327 in the five pack.
