Aguila 22-250 Rem 60gr Soft Point – Precise 20 Round Box

Description

Aguila 22-250 Rem 60gr Soft Point is a heavier-than-usual varmint load. Most factory 22-250 sits at 50 or 55 grains; this one runs 60 grains at 3,240 fps, trading a little muzzle velocity for better retained energy and a bullet that holds together on coyotes rather than coming apart on the surface.

Why Aguila 22-250 Rem 60gr Soft Point Runs a Heavier Bullet

The 22-250 Remington is a fast case for a small bullet, and the standard 50 to 55 grain varmint loads are built to fragment violently on prairie dogs. That is exactly right for prairie dogs and exactly wrong for a coyote at two hundred yards, where a thin-jacketed bullet can expend its energy in the hide and fail to reach anything important.

A 60 grain soft point at 3,240 fps is the answer to that. More bullet weight means more sectional density and more penetration, and a conventional soft point expands in a controlled way rather than disintegrating. Aguila 22-250 Rem 60gr Soft Point sits in the predator end of the 22-250 range rather than the rodent end.

Aguila is loaded by Industrias Tecnos in Cuernavaca, Mexico, on conventional brass with boxer primers. The cases are reloadable, which matters on a cartridge many owners handload for.

Published Ballistics

Aguila publishes 3,240 fps and 1,398 ft-lbs at the muzzle, dropping to 2,867 fps and 1,095 ft-lbs at 100 yards. The arithmetic reconciles exactly for a 60 grain bullet, so these are internally consistent numbers rather than marketing figures.

Retaining nearly 1,100 foot-pounds at a hundred yards is a great deal of energy for a 22 calibre, and it is why Aguila 22-250 Rem 60gr Soft Point works on animals considerably larger than a ground squirrel.

Twist rate is worth a moment of thought. A 60 grain flat-base soft point stabilizes in the 1:12 twist that most 22-250 rifles carry, but if your rifle is an unusually slow twist custom barrel, check before buying a case.

Field Notes

A note on naming: some distributor listings describe this as an InterLock load. Aguila own packaging and product page say Soft Point, so that is the description used here. Ask before ordering if the specific bullet construction matters to you.

Barrel heat is the real limit on a 22-250, not the ammunition. The case burns a lot of powder behind a small bore and a sporter-weight barrel will string shots badly once it warms. Pace yourself on a prairie dog town regardless of what you are shooting.

Pelt hunters should pattern expectations accordingly. A 60 grain soft point penetrates better than a 55 grain varmint bullet, which generally means more chance of an exit and a larger hole on the far side. If pelt damage is the priority, a frangible varmint bullet is the better choice.

Store it as you would any hunting ammunition and rotate it. A box of Aguila 22-250 Rem 60gr Soft Point that has ridden in a truck console through two summers is not the box you want to stake a long shot on.

Shooting 223 as well? ADI World Class 223 Rem 55gr BlitzKing covers the lighter varmint role, and 22-250 snap caps protect the firing pin during off-season trigger work. Published ballistics come from Aguila Ammunition.

For coyote and predator hunters running a 22-250, Aguila 22-250 Rem 60gr Soft Point offers more bullet than the standard varmint loads at a working price. MAG5 Firearms stocks it as manufacturer item 8338AG.
