Description
The Smith Wesson Volunteer XV 5.56 Rifle is a 16 inch 5.56 NATO carbine that arrives with the upgrades most owners would otherwise buy piecemeal, including B5 Systems furniture, a Radian ambidextrous charging handle and a PWS muzzle brake.
Smith Wesson Volunteer XV 5.56 Rifle Finished, Not a Starting Point
Most AR-15s in this price bracket ship as a foundation: a plain A2 grip, a basic stock, a mil-spec charging handle and a bird cage flash hider, all of which the owner replaces within a year. The Volunteer XV skips that stage by fitting the upgrades at the factory.
The furniture is B5 Systems throughout, a P-Grip Type 23 and an Enhanced SOPMOD stock with a QD attachment point. The charging handle is a Radian Raptor-LT, ambidextrous and far easier to run from either shoulder than a standard latch.
The muzzle wears a PWS 556 brake on a target-crowned barrel threaded 1/2×28. A brake rather than a flash hider is a deliberate choice, and it flattens what little recoil 5.56 produces to almost nothing.
Barrel, Handguard and Sights
The 16 inch barrel uses 5R rifling with a 1 in 8 twist. 5R keeps more consistent contact with the bullet than conventional rifling, which reduces deformation and fouling, and 1 in 8 stabilises everything from light varmint bullets to heavy 77 grain match loads.
A 15 inch aluminum S&W M-LOK forend covers nearly the whole barrel, and a 2 inch M-LOK rail section plus Magpul Type-2 M-LOK rail covers come in the box. That is enough length for a light, a hand stop and a sling mount without any of them crowding the others.
Williams Gun Sight Company folding sights are fitted front and rear, so the rifle is usable straight away and the sights fold flat under an optic. A forward assist, a forged integral trigger guard, a chromed firing pin and a flat-face trigger round out the build, along with a 15 inch cable lock.

Why Buyers Choose the Smith Wesson Volunteer XV 5.56 Rifle
Buying the B5 stock and grip, the Radian charging handle, the PWS brake and a set of folding sights separately would cost several hundred dollars and an afternoon of work. Here they are fitted from the factory.
5R rifling and a target crown are accuracy features rather than marketing, and a 1 in 8 twist means the rifle shoots whatever ammunition you can find.
An ambidextrous charging handle is the single most useful ambidextrous upgrade on an AR, because it is the control you use most often from either shoulder.
A 15 inch free-float M-LOK forend gives you almost the entire barrel for accessories, and free-floating helps accuracy in a way a clamped handguard cannot.
Who Should Buy It
The Smith Wesson Volunteer XV 5.56 Rifle suits shooters who want a finished rifle rather than a project, anyone who would otherwise budget for furniture and charging handle upgrades, and left-handed shooters who value the ambidextrous charging handle. Folding sights are fitted, so an optic is optional rather than required.
