Description
The Taurus 856 VZ Cyclone Brown is the two-inch, six-shot 856 in matte black carbon steel with a set of brown VZ Cyclone G10 grips fitted from the factory. Everything on it is steel – barrel, cylinder and frame – so it is the heavier 856 rather than the alloy Ultra Lite, and it shoots accordingly.
The grips are the reason to look at this one. VZ Cyclones are a sought-after aftermarket grip in their own right, and buying them already on the gun costs less than buying them separately would.
Part number 2-85621VZ19, UPC 725327939290. Three in stock.
What the Taurus 856 VZ Cyclone Brown is
- Six shots of .38 Special, rated for +P
- 2-inch barrel in matte black carbon steel
- Matte black carbon steel cylinder and frame – not aluminium
- Brown VZ Cyclone G10 grips
- Exposed hammer, so single action is available
- Transfer bar safety
- Fixed sights: integral rear notch and a ramp front

Steel frame, and why it matters on a snub
- The Taurus 856 VZ Cyclone Brown weighs roughly nine ounces more than the Ultra Lite. That is the difference between a revolver you can practise with and one you put away after two cylinders of +P
- Weight is the only thing that soaks up recoil in a gun this small. There is no slide moving, no gas system, nothing else to absorb it
- The cost is carry comfort. This wants a proper gun belt. In a flimsy waistband it will drag all day
- Six rounds instead of the usual five in a J-frame-sized revolver, which is the 856 line’s real selling point
- A 2-inch barrel gives up velocity, and .38 +P hollow points are the load most affected by it. Some open properly out of two inches and some do not – test the one you intend to carry

What VZ Cyclone grips are
The Taurus 856 VZ Cyclone Brown wears grips made of G10, which is glass cloth laminated in resin and then machined. The Cyclone pattern is a swirled, dished texture rather than sharp checkering – it locks the hand in without being as abrasive as VZ’s more aggressive patterns, which on a carry revolver is the right call. The brown and tan layering you see is the laminate itself showing through where the machining cut into it, not a coating, so it cannot wear off.
They are hard. G10 does not cushion recoil the way rubber does, and on a two-inch steel-framed .38 shooting +P you will notice that difference. The upside is that they never get slick with sweat or gun oil, they do not deteriorate with age, and they keep a slim profile that conceals better than a rubber boot grip.
Ammunition
.38 Special and .38 Special +P are both standardised by SAAMI, and this revolver is rated for both. Practise with standard-pressure wadcutters – they are cheap, accurate, and far more pleasant. Carry whichever +P load you have actually confirmed hits where the fixed sights point.
The rest of the 856 line
In the same two-inch size there is the plain black 856, the stainless version, and the lighter Ultra Lite. For pocket carry with nothing to snag, the concealed hammer 856 is the one. If you like the VZ grips and want a longer barrel and an optic cut, see the 856 TORO with blue VZ grips.
Why the Taurus 856 VZ Cyclone Brown earns its place
- Six rounds from the Taurus 856 VZ Cyclone Brown, in a frame the size most people expect to hold five
- Steel throughout, so it is genuinely shootable rather than something you endure
- VZ Cyclone grips fitted at the factory, at less than the cost of buying them separately
- Brown G10 against matte black is a combination that looks deliberate rather than loud
- Three in stock, and one at the distributor
The straight answer on who this suits: someone who carries a snub revolver and actually practises with it. The steel frame and the G10 grips both point the same way – this is a two-inch .38 set up to be shot regularly, not the lightest possible thing you can put in a pocket and forget.
If weight is your priority, buy the Ultra Lite and accept that it stings. If snag-free pocket carry is the priority, buy the concealed hammer model. If you want a small revolver you will get good with, the Taurus 856 VZ Cyclone Brown is the sensible choice and the grips are a genuine bargain.
