Description

The Tanfoglio Stock II 9mm Optic Ready is the slide-cut version of the Italian steel-frame pistol that has filled USPSA and IPSC Standard and Limited squads for two decades. This one is a 9mm, finished in hard chrome on both frame and slide, with red checkered grip panels and a 4.45-inch barrel.

Tanfoglio Stock II 9mm Optic Ready Overview

Fratelli Tanfoglio of Gardone Val Trompia builds the Stock II on its large frame, the same CZ 75-derived layout that underpins the Witness line sold in the US for years. The frame and slide are steel, the slide rides inside the frame rails, and the action is double-action/single-action with an ambidextrous frame-mounted safety, so you can carry it cocked and locked or start the first shot double action. 64 pounds empty per distributor data, which is heavy by modern standards and exactly why the gun shoots so flat.

The 9mm version is the low-recoil, low-cost-per-round choice of the family and is the best starting point for a new competitor.

Optic-Ready Slide and Sights

The rear of the slide is milled for an optic using a plate-based mounting system, so a range of mini reflex sights can be fitted with the correct adapter. Plates and screws are not always in the box and footprints differ, so check what your optic needs before you order. If you run irons, the factory set is an adjustable rear with a fiber-optic front. Bright fiber is quick in daylight but is close to invisible in poor light; it is a match sight, not a night sight.

Expect some trial and error the first time you zero a red dot sight on a steel slide that runs this hot after long strings.

Barrel and Accuracy

The 4.45-inch barrel uses polygonal rifling, which tends to be easy to clean and gives good velocity with jacketed bullets. Lead bullets and polygonal bores do not mix well, so stick with plated or jacketed loads or have the bore checked often. The long dust cover and heavy frame soak up recoil, and the single-action pull on these guns is short and crisp once you are past the first double-action shot. With quality ammunition the gun will out-shoot most of the people who buy it.

Magazines and Capacity

The Stock II takes Tanfoglio large-frame 9mm magazines; distributor listings show a 17-round magazine for this model. Spare factory magazines are available, and the large-frame pattern is shared with many Witness-family guns, which helps when you need four or five for a match. If you live in a state with a 10- or 15-round limit, this exact configuration may not be legal for you to receive, so read the State Laws section below before ordering.

Living With a Steel Competition Gun

At this weight the Stock II is not a carry pistol. It is a range, match and home-defense gun that rewards practice. The hard chrome finish resists rust better than blued steel and shows wear less, but it is not stainless and still wants a wipe-down after sweaty matches. Italian guns have excellent aftermarket support through competition gunsmiths, though holster selection is narrower than for a Glock or 1911, so plan on a competition rig made for Tanfoglio large frames.

Ammunition and Cost

Shooting 9mm keeps practice affordable compared to 10mm or .40, and recoil in a 40-ounce-plus steel gun is very soft. Standard 115- and 124-grain loads are a good match for the factory recoil spring. If you plan to shoot major power factor in Limited, you will need a different caliber, as 9mm only scores minor in that division.

State Laws and Ownership

Magazine capacity limits apply in states such as New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Massachusetts, Colorado, Illinois and others, and California requires roster listing that this pistol does not have. Pennsylvania buyers can take delivery through a licensed dealer with the usual state background check. Check your state and local rules before you buy, and ask us if you are unsure.
