Fast, Clean-Burning Steel for Waterfowl
Federal Speed-Shok is a steel waterfowl load built around speed. Federal redesigned it with fast-burning, clean propellant that leaves much less residue in the barrel and action.
A high-performance primer gives complete, consistent ignition, and the velocities are tuned for each payload. Steel shot is non-toxic, so Speed-Shok is suited to waterfowl hunting where lead shot is not allowed.

Waterfowl Hunting Tips
Use Federal Speed-Shok 28ga WF2836 shells only in shotguns chambered for 2-3/4 inch 28 gauge shells or longer.
Pattern steel shot with the choke you plan to hunt with; steel often patterns tighter than lead through the same choke.
Keep shots within a range where you can make clean, ethical kills, and let birds work closer when you can.
Federal and state waterfowl rules require non-toxic shot; check your local regulations before you hunt.
Federal Speed-Shok 28ga WF2836 ammo is a fast choice for duck and goose hunters who want a fast steel load.
Choosing a steel shot size
Smaller steel sizes such as 4 and 6 suit teal and smaller ducks over decoys. Sizes 2 and 3 are common all-around duck loads. Larger sizes such as BB, BBB and T carry more energy for geese and longer shots.
Steel and your choke
Steel shot is harder than lead and does not compress as much, so it tends to pattern tighter. Many hunters use improved cylinder or modified chokes rated for steel. Check that your choke tubes are marked as safe for steel shot.
Caring for your shotgun
Waterfowl hunting is hard on guns. Wipe down your shotgun after every hunt, dry it fully, and add a light coat of oil to fight rust. Store Federal Speed-Shok 28ga WF2836 shells in a dry place in their original box.
Shot speed and lead
Faster loads can shorten the lead you need on crossing birds compared with slower shells, but every shooter and gun is different. Spend time on a sporting clays course or with a hand thrower to learn your own sight picture before the season.
Staying legal
Waterfowl hunting comes with specific rules on shot type, shell capacity, hunting hours and bag limits. Review federal and state regulations each season, and carry your licenses and stamps when you head to the blind.
Reading the box
The box lists the gauge, shell length, payload, shot size and muzzle velocity. Always match the gauge and shell length to your shotgun’s chamber, which is usually stamped on the barrel. Never fire a shell that is longer than the chamber.
About the Speed-Shok Steel line
Federal Speed-Shok 28ga WF2836 is part of Federal’s Speed-Shok Steel family, which covers several shot sizes and payloads so you can match the load to your gun and the job at hand. Federal publishes the specifications for each load, so you can compare options before you buy.
Buying the right amount
When you find a load that performs well in your shotgun, buy enough for practice and the full season at the same time. Shells from the same lot tend to perform the same, which keeps your results consistent from the first shot to the last.
