Description
Federal Hi-Bird 12ga 6 Shot shotshells are Federal Premium Hi-Bird loads built to reach out to high, fast birds. Each 2-3/4 inch 12 gauge shell carries 1-1/4 ounces of number 6 lead shot at about 1330 feet per second and roughly 281 pellets. Federal pairs that payload with a two-piece wad for consistent long-range patterns. Each box holds 25 shells.
Why Hunters Choose Hi-Bird
Hi-Bird uses a two-piece wad with Federal’s SoftCell technology. The wad is designed to cushion the shot charge as it starts moving, which Federal says reduces perceived recoil and produces tighter, more consistent patterns at longer range.
The lead shot in every Hi-Bird shell is engineered for a balance of hardness and density. Harder shot deforms less as it travels up the barrel and through the choke, so more pellets stay round and fly true. Round pellets hold their energy better and help fill out an even pattern on a distant bird.
With 1-1/4 ounces of shot moving at about 1330 fps, this load is built for the shots that lighter target loads struggle with: tall doves riding the wind, flaring pigeons, crows working a decoy spread and pheasants flushing a step or two farther out than you hoped.

Field Tips
Use Federal Hi-Bird 12ga 6 Shot only in shotguns chambered for 2-3/4 inch or longer 12 gauge shells.
Pattern your shotgun with this load at the distance you expect to shoot. Choke and barrel combinations vary, and a few minutes at the patterning board pays off in the field.
Wear eye and ear protection, and confirm your hunting regulations allow lead shot where you plan to hunt.
Keep shells dry and in their box until you are ready to load.
Federal Hi-Bird 12ga 6 Shot ammo is a dependable choice for upland hunters, dove shooters and pigeon hunters who want a fast, heavy 12 gauge load.
Number 6 shot is a popular size for doves, quail, pigeons and other upland birds at moderate to long range. Pairing that shot size with a high-velocity payload helps each pellet carry enough energy when birds are working at the edge of your range.
A 1-1/4 ounce load at this speed produces noticeable recoil compared with light target shells. A properly fitted gun, a good recoil pad and a solid mount make a big difference over a long day in the field.
Many hunters keep a box of Federal Hi-Bird 12ga 6 Shot shells for the second half of a dove shoot, when birds get wary and start flying higher. Having a heavier load on hand lets you keep reaching those birds instead of watching them slide past.
Buying several boxes of Federal Hi-Bird 12ga 6 Shot from the same lot keeps your patterns consistent through the season. Store shells in a cool, dry place in their original box.
On a busy dove field, birds often come in pairs and small groups. A load with plenty of pellets, like Federal Hi-Bird 12ga 6 Shot shells with roughly 281 pellets, gives you a dense pattern for that quick second shot. When the hunt is over, clean your bore and choke threads to keep everything working smoothly.
