Speed for Long Range Varmint Work
The 22-250 Remington is famous for speed. Its large case pushes light .224 bullets to velocities that flatten trajectory and reduce wind drift, making long shots on small targets far more forgiving.
This load uses a 50 grain jacketed hollow point built for rapid, explosive expansion. Fast energy transfer is exactly what you want on small varmints and predators, and it helps lower the chance of pass throughs and ricochets in open country.
Federal’s published ballistics show this load still moving about 2,380 feet per second at 300 yards. The 50 round box gives you plenty of ammunition for a full day in a prairie dog town.

Varmint Hunting Tips
Use Federal 22-250 Rem 50gr JHP Varmint ammo only in rifles chambered for 22-250 Remington.
Zero at 200 yards to take full advantage of the flat trajectory, then confirm your holds at 300 and 400 yards.
High velocity cartridges heat barrels quickly. Pace your shots during long prairie dog sessions.
Always know what lies beyond your target, even with fragmenting varmint bullets.
Federal 22-250 Rem 50gr JHP Varmint ammo is a superb choice for prairie dog shooters, groundhog hunters and coyote callers who want a fast, flat shooting load in a value sized 50 round box.
Federal 22-250 Rem 50gr JHP Varmint ammo produces roughly 1,650 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle by standard calculation, more than enough for coyotes, foxes and bobcats at sensible ranges. On smaller varmints, the fast hollow point delivers the decisive results varmint hunters expect.
The 22-250 began life as a wildcat cartridge before Remington standardized it in 1965, and it has been a favorite of varmint hunters ever since. Rifles chambered for it range from lightweight sporters to heavy barreled varmint rifles built for all day shooting from a bench.
Wind is the biggest challenge at long range. Watch grass, mirage and dust, and keep a log of your hits and misses so you learn how Federal 22-250 Rem 50gr JHP Varmint rounds drift in different conditions.
Store your ammunition in a cool, dry place in its original box. Buying several boxes of Federal 22-250 Rem 50gr JHP Varmint from the same lot keeps your zero consistent from trip to trip.
A good rest makes all the difference with a varmint rifle. Use a solid bipod or bench bag, spot your shots through the scope and adjust quickly between targets. Clean your barrel after long sessions, since copper fouling builds up faster at these velocities.
Coyote hunters should consider the time of day and the wind direction when choosing a stand. Set up with the wind in your face, use natural cover to break up your outline and be ready for a fast shot at 100 to 300 yards when a predator commits.
