Hornady Critical Defense 32 ACP FTX – Reliable Pocket Pistol Load

$33.24

A 60 grain FTX at 1000 fps for about 133 ft-lbs, measured from a two inch barrel rather than a long test tube. The 32 ACP has never had much energy to spare, which is exactly why a bullet that cannot clog and still opens matters more here than in a larger calibre. 25 rounds per box.

Description

The Hornady Critical Defense 32 ACP FTX addresses the one thing a 32 cannot afford to get wrong. With about 133 ft-lbs to work with, a bullet that fails to expand is simply a small hole, and a bullet that expands too eagerly stops short. The 60 grain FTX at 1000 fps is tuned to thread that gap.

Hornady Critical Defense 32 ACP FTX Overview

Hornady item 90063 loads a 60 grain FTX bullet to a nominal 1000 fps, producing roughly 133 ft-lbs at the muzzle. Twenty five rounds per box.

Hornady publishes the curve from a two inch test barrel: 1000 fps and 133 ft-lbs at the muzzle, 882 fps and 104 ft-lbs at fifty yards, and 797 fps and 85 ft-lbs at a hundred. Using a two inch barrel is the right call here, because that is roughly what a 32 ACP pocket pistol actually has.

The 32 ACP dates to 1899 and John Browning, and it spent most of the twentieth century as the standard European police cartridge. It is mild, it is easy to shoot, and it fits in guns small enough to genuinely disappear in a pocket.

The honest case for the cartridge has always been the same. A 32 in your pocket beats a 45 in the safe at home, and for some people a tiny pistol is the only one they will actually carry every day.

32 ACP Defense Ammo Ballistics

At 1000 fps a 60 grain bullet produces about 133 ft-lbs, from grains times velocity squared divided by 450437. That is modest by any modern standard, roughly a third of what a 9mm generates, and nobody sensible pretends otherwise.

What the cartridge offers instead is negligible recoil and a genuinely pocketable gun. A Seecamp or a Kel-Tec P32 weighs under seven ounces empty and goes places a 9mm will not.

Because the energy budget is so small, bullet performance matters more here than in any other defensive calibre. There is nothing spare to waste on a hollow point that fails to open.

Hornady also loads low flash propellant here. A pocket pistol is most likely to be used in poor light at very close range, and a fireball that costs you several seconds of vision is a real problem for a 32 ACP defense ammo user.

Why The 60 Grain FTX Bullet Matters In This Calibre

The FTX bullet answers the oldest failure mode in hollow points. Fired through heavy clothing, a conventional cavity packs full of fabric and the bullet then behaves like ball ammunition, passing through without opening at all.

Hornady fills the cavity with a soft polymer Flex Tip. There is nothing for fabric to pack into, and on impact the tip is driven rearward into the bullet, pushing the jacket open from the inside out. Expansion begins because of the tip rather than despite the clothing.

In a 32 ACP that mechanism is doing more work than in any larger calibre. A 9mm hollow point that fails to open is still a 9mm hole moving fast; a 32 that fails to open is a 0.312 inch hole with 133 ft-lbs behind it, and the margin for error is very thin.

Hornady tunes the expansion deliberately modest for the same reason. Open too wide and a 60 grain FTX bullet stops before it reaches anything that matters, so the design aims for a controlled mushroom that still penetrates to a useful depth.

Nickel plated cases round out the design. Nickel resists the corrosion that comes from months of pocket carry and body heat far better than bare brass does, and it feeds a little more smoothly in a small blowback action.

For a calibre with this little to spare, low flash concealed carry ammunition that opens every time is about as much as bullet design can contribute.

Pistols That Suit This Pocket Pistol Carry Load

Any pistol chambered in 32 ACP in sound working order will fire this load. That covers the Beretta 3032 Tomcat, the Seecamp LWS32, the Kel-Tec P32, the Walther PP and PPK in 32, the Colt 1903 and the many European service pistols in the chambering.

A note on older guns: many 32 ACP pistols are genuinely antique, and a century old blowback action may not appreciate modern ammunition even at standard pressure. Have an old pistol checked over by a gunsmith before you carry it.

Feeding is worth confirming by hand. Some small blowback pistols were designed around round nose ball ammunition and can be fussy with anything else, and the polymer tip helps here but does not guarantee it.

If your pistol is a modern design rated for it, a pocket pistol carry load like this is the sensible thing to keep in it. If the gun is a genuine antique, ball ammunition may be the safer choice for the gun itself.
