Description

Mountain rifles usually ask you to choose between weight and accuracy, and most of them choose weight and hope you will forgive the groups. The Springfield 2020 Redline 20 Inch refuses that trade. It puts the same Model 2020 precision action found in the Waypoint rifles into a skeletonised Grayboe stock, hangs a carbon jacketed barrel off the front, and still guarantees three quarters of a minute of angle at a hundred yards.
Where The Weight Went
On the Springfield 2020 Redline 20 Inch the Grayboe Trekker stock is the most obvious saving. It is a skeletonised design with lightening cuts through the forend and buttstock, and it weighs twenty eight ounces. Grayboe stocks are fibreglass composites rather than injection moulded polymer, so they do not flex under a sling or shift with humidity the way a cheap hunting stock will. Length of pull adjusts from 13.25 to 14.25 inches in quarter inch steps and out to sixteen inches with spacers.
The carbon fiber jacketed barrel is a BSF unit, a thin fluted steel core inside a roll wrapped sleeve. Fluting under the sleeve removes more weight and increases the surface area available to shed heat, and the carbon jacket provides stiffness that a steel barrel of the same mass could not. It is free floated, threaded at the muzzle and fitted with a radial brake and a thread protector.
Small details finish the job. Three sling studs, one at the rear and two up front, let you run a sling and a bipod without fighting for the same stud. An integral bubble level doubles as a thumb rest at the rear of the action, so cant can be checked without adding an accessory to the scope rail.
Action, Trigger And Cartridge
The Model 2020 action is a stainless steel design with dual locking lugs on a fluted bolt, EDM cut raceways and an optimised extraction cam. EDM machining of the raceways is what gives the bolt its consistent feel across the stroke, and it is a process usually reserved for custom actions. Springfield built its accuracy reputation on this action in the Waypoint line and the tolerances here are the same.
The trigger is a TriggerTech unit using the company Frictionless Release Technology, adjustable between roughly two and a half and five pounds. A free floating roller sits between the sear and the trigger, which almost eliminates creep and gives a break that feels like snapping a glass rod. A low profile non snag safety sits alongside, shaped so it does not catch on clothing or a pack strap.
Feeding is from an AICS pattern magazine, which is the industry standard and means spares and higher capacity options are available from many manufacturers. In 6.5 Creedmoor the twenty inch barrel gives up very little velocity against a longer tube, and the cartridge remains the most sensible modern choice for a mountain rifle: mild recoil, widely available match ammunition, and enough ballistic efficiency to keep wind drift manageable.

Two honest points. A radial brake makes this rifle noticeably louder at the bench and for anyone standing beside you, which is the price of the reduced recoil; a suppressor is the better long term answer if your state allows one. And light rifles are harder to shoot well offhand than heavy ones, because there is less mass to damp your own movement. Practise from field positions rather than only from a bench.
Why Buyers Choose The Springfield 2020 Redline 20 Inch
The first reason buyers choose the Springfield 2020 Redline 20 Inch is that it carries like a hunting rifle and shoots like a precision rifle. Most people who have hauled a heavy barrelled rifle up a ridge and then tried to shoot it off a pack understand exactly how much that matters. The accuracy guarantee is the same one Springfield applies to rifles twice this weight.
The second reason is the parts ecosystem. AICS magazines and a standard scope base pattern mean nothing here is proprietary. The rifle can be set up exactly as you want it and serviced years from now without waiting on a single supplier, which is not true of every lightweight rifle with a clever chassis.
The third reason is the trigger and the stock together. A TriggerTech trigger and a Grayboe stock bought separately and fitted would cost close to a thousand dollars on top of a donor rifle. Getting both from the factory, matched to an action built for accuracy, is where the value in this rifle actually sits.
Who Should Buy The Springfield 2020 Redline 20 Inch
This suits the mountain hunter who refuses to give up accuracy for weight, the backcountry shooter who covers ground on foot, and anyone who wants one rifle that works at the bench and in the field. Look elsewhere if you shoot mostly from a bench and would rather have the stability of a heavy rifle, or if the price is more than a hunting rifle needs to be for your use.
