Description
The Iver Johnson IJ500 12 Gauge Semi Auto is a gas operated semi-automatic 12 gauge with a 3 1/2 inch chamber, a 28 inch vent rib barrel and a black synthetic stock. Iver Johnson model IJ50012SYNSM comes with five Mobil style choke tubes and two gas pistons, so it cycles everything from light target loads to heavy magnum waterfowl shells.
Iver Johnson IJ500 12 Gauge Semi Auto Overview
The IJ500 is built for hunters who want one affordable shotgun for ducks, geese, turkeys and clays. Its 3 1/2 inch super magnum chamber handles 2 3/4, 3 and 3 1/2 inch shells, and the gas system is tuned with two included pistons: a light pressure piston for loads under 1 1/8 ounces and a high pressure piston for heavier loads, so the gun runs reliably while managing recoil.
The 28 inch barrel is made from 4140 hardened steel with a vent rib, a fiber optic front sight and a brass intermediate bead, and it accepts Mobil style choke tubes, five of which are included. The black synthetic stock and forend are weatherproof and easy to care for, and the gun measures about 49 inches overall.
3 1/2 Inch Versatility
A 3 1/2 inch chamber lets you shoot heavy steel loads for big geese and high flying ducks, as well as 3 inch turkey loads and light 2 3/4 inch target shells. One gun covers nearly every hunting situation.
Choosing the Right Gas Piston
Use the light pressure piston for target and light field loads under 1 1/8 ounces, and switch to the high pressure piston for heavier magnum loads. Using the right piston keeps the action cycling reliably and reduces wear.
Care and Maintenance
Clean the gas system and piston regularly, especially after shooting many rounds, and wipe down the barrel and receiver after wet hunts. Lightly oil the action and keep the choke threads clean.
Choosing Shells
Pattern your shotgun with several loads at the distances you expect to shoot, since every barrel and choke combination behaves differently. Use the right shot size for your game or target and follow local rules on nontoxic shot where required.
Fit and Mounting
A shotgun that fits lets you look straight down the rib with your cheek firmly on the stock. Practice smooth gun mounts at home with an unloaded gun to build consistency in the field and on the clay range.
Care and Maintenance
Clean the bore, chokes and action after each outing, especially after rain or salt water. A light coat of oil on metal parts and a clean action keep the shotgun running reliably for years.
Choke Selection
Tighter chokes such as modified and full extend effective range for waterfowl and turkey, while improved cylinder and skeet chokes open patterns for close birds and clay targets. Always use chokes rated for the shot you are shooting, especially steel.
Recommended Accessories
Eye and ear protection, a cleaning kit, extra choke tubes and a padded case are smart additions. Hunters may want a sling, while clay shooters often add a shell pouch and recoil reducing pad.
